Sports Cougars teach respect to unwary opponents By Rodney Fobert Of The Print The men’s tennis team from Qackamas Community Col lege wrapped up its season May 16-18 with the Northwest Athletic Association of Com munity Colleges (NWAACC) Championship tournament. The event took place at Yakima Community College in Washington. Players were seeded in the brackets according to their record during the league season for the double elimination championship tournament. Coach Kathie MIKE BOOTH AIMS high to achieve winning serve. Photo by Dan Wheeler Woods pointed out that this put the Cougars at a disadvan tage because the team had not competed in a league this season. “We went up there virtually an unknown,” Coach Woods said, adding,“But we went away gaining respect because we were competitive, I felt, in all positions.” In the singles competition, the Cougar’s number-one man, Renato Iwersen, advanc ed the farthest of anyone from Clackamas. After losing his first match of the tournament, Iwersen went on to the semi finals of the consolation bracket, where he suffered his second defeat. Steve Lewis was the only Clackamas singles player to win his first match of the tour nament. After winning his first match, however, Lewis lost the next two, eliminating him from the tournament. In the doubles competition, the Cougar’s number-two and three teams did well in the tournament. Looking back on the season, Coach Woods said that she felt the team had, “a very successful season.” She added that the team’s 2-12 record “isn’t any indication of how successful this season was.” Woods also said, “I was pleased that our record didn’t bring the guys down,” adding that the team “hung in there and showed that they could win.” Singles, doubles compete well at NWAACC With an overall record of 7-10 and a 6-8 record against other community colleges, the Clackamas Community Col lege women’s tennis team wrapped up their season at the NWAACC Championships May 16-18, in Pasco, Wash. Osborne started out the tour nament well, beating her first two opponents. She then ran into some trouble, however, losing her next two matches. Osborne finished the season with the best singles record of the team with 10-6. Stafford started out with a loss in the first round, but came back with a string of three straight wins in the con solation bracket before losing again in the semi-final round. Stafford ends the season with a record of 8-7. Anjanette Robbins also went as far as the semi-final round of the consolation bracket before being eliminated from competition. The number-three doubles team of Robbins and Les Kingsbury, lost their first match, but then had a string of wins that took them to the final match for the consola tion spot against Bellevue, where they were defeated. “It’s the best I’ve seen those two play together before,” Coach Nancy Mikleton said.
