Debbie Simon leads women’s x-country through nationals By J. Dana Haynes Of the Print Debbie Simon went the distance for the Women’s Cross Country team, placing 8th at regionals two weekends ago and 42nd at nationals last week. “I was pretty pleased with the way I ran,” Simon stated. Simon’s finishing time has been fairly consistent, with only six seconds difference between her regional and national times. “I was happy for Debbie,” coach Marilyn Linsenmeyer said. “She’s team oriented and since we didn’t really send a team to either meet, it was tough for her to get up for them.” Plagued by injuries, only three women distancers made it to regionals which were held at Salem’s Bush Park. Anna Muceus and Jenine Tucker finished 11th and 20th, respec tively, with Simon breaking the plane at 11th place, with a time of 19.23. “Jenine ran well,” Linsenmeyer said. “She’s been running pretty consistently all year. So has Anna, but she didn’t have as good a day as usual.” Lane Community took the day at regionals, with a first place team finish and Janet Beaudry taking the individual first. Mt. Hood Community came in second. Ten schools ran in the Salem rain, eight from Oregon and two from Idaho. One Cougar who did not attend the meet was Alice Hunger, who has been hexxed by a recurring knee injury ac quired during high school. “Originally, I planned on runn ing in the regionals, but then I decided it was better not to push it,” Hunger said.
