sports season looks bright By Rick Obritschkewitsch Staff photo by Sue Hanneman WIND UP-Patti Richardson “sights-in” spike« The women started off their season by winning against all of their opponents until they got to Mt. Hood Community Col lege. Coach Loren Swivel looks at Mt Hood as being probably the toughest opponent that the Cougars will go up against this season. The games with Mt. Hood on Oct. 1 went, 17-15, and 15-6. Since it was still early in the year, Coach Swivel ex pects the women to be improv ed before the team has to meet Mt. Hood again. Less than a week before Mt. Hood, the squad competed in the Linfield Tournament against three other colleges, with the Cbugars being the on ly community college com peting. The other colleges, in cluded, Warner-Pacific, the University of Portland, and Concordia. The Cougars took Warner-Pacific, 15-9, 15-10, and 15-13, the U. of Portland, 15-5, 17-15, and 15-3, with Portland taking the second game. Concordia was downed in only two games, with scores of 15-4, and 15-6. Just two days prior to the tournment, Clackamas took on Judson Baptist, at the College.. The winning scores for the Cougars in this match were 15:6, 15-3, and 15-10. In the season opener, the women of Clackamas downed the Multnomah School of Bj- ble, 15-2, 15-5, and 15-3. The 1980 Volleyball team at the College is a. very young one, but Coach Swivel com mented, “It’s going to be a good season, honestly. We have much depth.” Debbie Nolz is the only sophomore returning for the Cougars, an All-State, Metro in previous seas is joined by a host of ding freshmen, as indii their awards of past < Ronda Westeren an< Ziemba were All-State Metro selections. Cyd mick was also an i selection, and Lou Am was All-Metro. The rest of the team Pam Burkert, Lori Dawn Dunn, Angel phrey, Therese K Dionne O’Dell, Patti son and Susan Scoggii Szanto excited about season New Coach Janos Szanto is looking forward to Clacamas’ soccer season. So far the team has won both of its first two games. As Coach Szanto put it, “So far we’ve tackled everyone.” Coach Szanto doesn’t seem to have to work too much, by what he said, “I really don’t have much to do, we have a great team on hand. They real ly work well together. In fact, we’v scored more in our first two games, than the team did all together last year.’’’ This is Coach Szanto’s first year coaching at the College. He comes from Hungary, where he played professionally for almost eight years. He is so proficient at the sport, that in 1968 he was chosen for the Hungarian Soccer team. Upcoming games will be at the University of Oregon, on Oct. 11, and Oregon Institute of Technology on Oct. 18. The first home game will be Oct. 25 against Portland Com munity College, the defending champions. Nancy Reynolds took first-place with a 19:07.3, Debbie Simon was fourth with a time of Becky Kokesh had a fifth-place time of 20:07.9, Raimondi (above) was seventh at 20:55.1, Jackie was eleventh with a time of 21:53.1, and Peg was fifthteenth with a time of 22:07.2.
