Campus music talent displayed one song, Charlie Parker’s “Yardbird Suite.” Another music student, Wendy Rose Snyder, sang with the band. Snyder has sung jazz in Portland area clubs and benefits for three and a half years. Sales-wise, “Low Budget" reached Billboard magazine’s top 10, making it the largest selling Kinks album in their long history. But other than that, “Low Bu'dget” proves to be a fairly mediocore attempt by a group that can do better. , For years, they have been trying to recapture the initial success they received in the United States way back in 1964 when “You Really Got Me” was : their smash hit (no, it’s not an original Van Halen song), but except for 1970’s “Lola,” the Kinks falls By Mike Koller Of The Print Kinks have faded further and further away from most of the record-buying public. Now, the Kinks have stor med back into the public’s eye, riding the sucess of their disco- oriented hit, “Wish I Could Fly Like Superman.” It’s not bad for a disco song, but for a Kinks tune it’s not even worth a second listen. Ray Davies, the mind and voice behind the Kinks, is sometimes con sidered a genius for hrs creative abilities, but he won’t be receiving much praise for writing songs like this one. short ■ !S8fifs The Dancer’s Workshop will present “Staying Off Otters,” a gallery exhibition of music and dance. The Kinks recorded “Low Budget” in New York City in stead of England and some of their songs, like the title cut “Low Budget” and “Gallon of Gas,” reflect the declining economic situation in America. These two cuts demonstrate some of Ray Davies’ unique humor, but otherwise the album title “Low Budget” ap pears to describe the quality of music ,the Kinks are now making instead of the economic situation. Despite the one disco track, the Kinks have apparently decided to concentrate more on rocking-out than on previous albums, and it works on some of the tunes. “Attitude” and “Pressure” feature some sharp guitar lines by Ray’s brother, Dave Davies, who, along with drummer Mick Avory, has been with the Kinks since 1964. ■ “Catch Me Now I’m Falling" is a puzzle.
