*■ Upepo booked for first dance Upepo, a well known Portland based musical group, will be performing at Clacka mas Community College's first dance of the year. Upepo tied with Heart for the title "Best Pacific Northwest Group" according to a reader's poll in the magazine "Musical Notes". Upepo is a polyrhythm band. They play Latin, rock 'n roll, and jazz with African influence for various clubs and concerts in the Eugene, Seattle, Portland and Bellingham, Wash, areas. The seven member band play instruments consisting of the congos, flute, saxaphone, drums, keyboard and vibraband. A vibraband is a strip of rubber which is stretched across the mouth and fingered like a violin while simultaneously blowing on it. The group invented this instrument because they couldn't find the sound they wanted to produce with any other instrument. Upepo's rhythm has been known to gen erate enthusiasm and a desire to dance in the most 'burned out' crowds. The ASG sponsored event will be Satur- day, Oct. 7 from 8 to 12 p.m. in the Com- munity Center Mall. Admission is $1 stu- dents and $2 general.
