4 THE GRANTONIAN October 21,1966 Generals try to stymie Metro streak Following 5 consecutive Port land Interscholastic league losses to Metro league opponents, the Generals will invade Sunset and try to break the city losing streak tonight. Last week the Lincoln Cardinals knotted the title race by blasting the Gen erals, 25-12. Thus the Gen erals will go into a game with a losing streak for the first time in 3 years. , Led by senior quarterback Brent Curtis, Sunset has a 4-2 league record to date. The Apol los were fifth in last year’s Metro race with 3 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties. Lettermen and backs are abundant at Sunset, accord ing to Coach Darrel Davis. Linemen Stan Hart, Terry Nickerson, Pat Swanson, Mark Buxton, John Hire, Ed Beers, Tom Drougas and Dennis Wagner all have ex perience. Backs who see action for the GRANT HIGH KEGLERS at Apollos include Curtis, Steve Dossey, Kirk Graves, Larry Giegle, Doug Johnson, Frank Fortino, Gordy Gredvig, Steve Kaster, Steve Warren and Scott Mosiman. Quarterback Curtis has passed well for the Apollos, to a variety of receivers. He ranks second in the league with 8 touchdown tosses. Since this is the final year of PIL-Metro competition; the Met- Joanne Kraft wins singles title in fall league tennis tournament Under the coaching of Miss Joan Egbers, the girls’ tennis teams have had several victories and áre finishing the last half of a 2-week tournament today. In the fall Portland Inter Scholastic league tennis tourna ment, 18 girls participated from Grant. Senior Joanne Kraft took first place in varsity singles, de feating Jean Nakadate of Wilson 6-3, 6-0. The varsity doubles match showed seniors Gretchen Fehr- enbacher and Joanne Kraft de feating Carol Jean Davis and Barbra Pollari of Madison 6-0, 6-2. In the junior varsity singles, sophomore Alice Bailey was de feated, and in the doubles 2 teams made it to the semi-finals but were defeated. According to Oregon Journal’s Bill Mulflur, however, the matchings have favored the Metro teams. Tonight’s game will be im portant from the standpoint that the Generals are the city’s co leaders and the Generals haven’t lost 2 games in a row since 1963. Despite the fact that Coach Cotton pulled his top three runners the Generals downed Lincoln, Franklin and Jefferson. Freshman football team rambles to DICK CARVER'S Majestic Drive In Cleaners third victory after 'poor' first half Deep Cleaning Draperies East Side Hollywood District Posting their third victory in as many times out, the freshman football team rolled over Roose velt 27-6. “Great job on defense; they really did the job for us,” com mented Coach Bill White on his team’s come-from-behind vic tory. Coach White cited Ward Bruner, Fred Piuw and Ken Wolfe as doing a great job on his “Mad Dog” defense. These three were also the leading tacklers for this game. After a shaky first half which saw Roosevelt ahead, 6-0, the Privates began to roll and break the game wide open. Spark plug Robert Bates led all scorers as he tallied three times in the sec ond half. “In the first half we went pri marily with our trap plays,” said assistant coach Vern Marshall, “but in the second half we ran mostly our quick opener series and that did the job for us.” Coach Marshall also said that Swim team faces 'tough'competition “We’re doing just great,” com mented Coach Carl Rubin on his boys swim team’s success so far this season. With a record of 7-1, the tankmen will try to improve on thëir record next week when they face Roosevelt and Lincoln Monday and Thursday. “Roosevelt, fielding a team lacking in depth and strength, shouldn’t prove to be too formid able of a foe,” according to Coach Rubin. Lincoln, rated high in league standings, should be strong. “Lincoln has always given us tough competition and they’ve always been pretty good,” stated Coach Rubin. He also attributed some of their success to the fact that a lot of their swimmers also compete for the Multnomah Ath letic Club swim team. Last week’s swimming action saw the Generals record their fifth and sixth wins as they trounced Madison, 71-24, and swamped undermanned Washing ton, 83-8.
