Generals try to stymie Metro streak
Following 5 consecutive Port
land Interscholastic league losses
to Metro league opponents, the
Generals will invade Sunset and
try to break the city losing streak
tonight.
Last week the Lincoln
Cardinals knotted the title
race by blasting the Gen
erals, 25-12. Thus the Gen
erals will go into a game
with a losing streak for the
first time in 3 years.
, Led by senior quarterback
Brent Curtis, Sunset has a 4-2
league record to date. The Apol
los were fifth in last year’s Metro
race with 3 wins, 3 losses and 2
ties.
Lettermen and backs are
abundant at Sunset, accord
ing to Coach Darrel Davis.
Linemen Stan Hart, Terry
Nickerson, Pat Swanson,
Mark Buxton, John Hire,
Ed Beers, Tom Drougas and
Dennis Wagner all have ex
perience.

ro league has already sewn up
the best record. According to
Oregon Journal’s Bill Mulflur,
however, the matchings have
favored the Metro teams.
Tonight’s game will be im
portant from the standpoint that
the Generals are the city’s co
leaders and the Generals haven’t
lost 2 games in a row since 1963.
This will be the first meeting
of the two schools in the non
counting games.

“Great job on defense; they
really did the job for us,” com
mented Coach Bill White on his
team’s come-from-behind vic
tory. Coach White cited Ward
Bruner, Fred Piuw and Ken
Wolfe as doing a great job on
his “Mad Dog” defense. These
three were also the leading
tacklers for this game.

saw Roosevelt ahead, 6-0, the

the game wide open. Spark plug

Swim team faces
'tough'competition
“We’re doing just great,” com
mented Coach Carl Rubin on his
boys swim team’s success so far
this season. With a record of 7-1,
the tankmen will try to improve
on thëir record next week when
they face Roosevelt and Lincoln
Monday and Thursday.
“Roosevelt, fielding a team
lacking in depth and strength,
shouldn’t prove to be too formid
able of a foe,” according to Coach
Rubin.
Lincoln, rated high in league
standings, should be strong.
“Lincoln has always given us
tough competition and they’ve
always been pretty good,” stated
Coach Rubin. He also attributed
some of their success to the fact
that a lot of their swimmers also
compete for the Multnomah Ath
letic Club swim team.
Last week’s swimming action
saw the Generals record their
fifth and sixth wins as they
trounced Madison, 71-24, and
swamped undermanned Washing
ton, 83-8.
