I t is a crime, by the penal code, to iperate a motor vehicle while under he in fluence o f liquor. B e fo r e God it s a crime almost equal to murder, for inly the precautions o f others can save hem from bein g killed by the inebri ited, irresponsible, m entally ineapaci ated fool at the wheel. None of these things should have had auy weight or b e aring on the caao. i f a less prominent o ffe nd er, i f a less w ealthy ofA-mler, i f a younger o f fender, i f a lum b erja ck from the Cot tage Grove country , for instance, would not have received the same kind of tre a tm e n t from this court, there was no reaaou why t m s rich and drunken o f f e n d e r should have received such tre atm e n t. I t is the b e lie f o f the people gen e rally t h a t a C o ttag e Grove lumlier- j a c k would hav e been, under the same condition, promptly put tiehuid the b ars and there are many who can not be made to believe that the court was not bribed. While T h e S e n t in e l would vigorously defend the court against any such charge, y e t they have them selves laid themselves open to such n suspicion, and it is this apparen t dis tinetio n made between o ffe n d e r s that brings the courts and governm ent into disrepute and makes bolsheviks, anar rh is ts and other enemies o f the estub lished law. H. Hawley, one o f the con tracto rs, was in Eugene T uesday to interview the county court regarding it. Mr. Hawley was asso ci ated with Emmet S h a rp in the work. E n gin e e r* McCloud nnd Hodge, o f the s t a te highway department, were also there. T h e disagreem ent is reg arding the cla s sifica tio n o f c er ta in work that the eon tra c to r* did on the jo b , they claim ing one c la s sific a tio n nnd the engineers rim m in g another. T h e c las sificatio n claimed by the c o n tra c to r s would re suit in the payment to them o f ii c o n sid erable sum more than they would get if the c la s sific a tio n o f the engi neers fo r t h a t particular work were al lowed to stand. Not being able to tor and engineers appealed to enunty m a r t , but no s ettle m e n t has been made.
