For a typical shelf or bookease pro ject that will be given a painted finish, lumber costs can be cut in half by buying No. 2 or 3 Grade in- stead of Select, and the end result can be just as good. Upgrading that you can do your- self is the answer to the use of in- expensive lumber. If the surface is a bit rough, sand or plane it smooth. Pu. h out any loose knots, coat the sides with household cement and re place. if necessary, fill in around knots with Plastic Wood, after ce ment has dried. Deep dents, cracks and checks should also be filled with Plastic Wood. In using Plastic Wood as a filler, build it up slightly above the board surface. When the filler has hardened, sand it flush and smooth. Shallow dents can often be raised by covering them with wet blotting paper and “pressing” with a med- ium-hot iron. To flatten a cupped board, wet the Concave side, cover with damp rags, and leave the board in a warm room over night. If a board is bowed, sup- port it at each end and pile weights on the center. Give the board plenty of time to straighten.
