substitute fo r peat moss in re­
taining m oisture in garden and
lawn soils has been practiced fo r
several years on a sm all scale by
some nurserymen and gardeners.
George O tten. landscape engineer
w ith the State H ighw ay depart­
ment, has done considerable ex­
perim ental w ork along these lines
and is quite enthusiastic about the
possibilities o f this practice. In
addition the State F orestry de­
partm ent is ca rryin g on an experi­
ment to determ ine the effective­
ness o f the sawdust in m ulching
seed beds at the nursery.
