Women Factor in Oregon History — UNIVERSITY OF OREGON— The first six white women to cross the Rockies into Oregon did much toward making the north west. the “cradle of American western civilization," Dr. Clifford Merrill Drury, biographer and historian, told University of Ore gon summer session students In an address recently. i In 1938 these women joined to gether to form the first women's club west of the divide, the Co lumbia Maternal association, which wax "devoted to the found ing of Christian homes in the West" in the hope that they might train their children and husbands “in the way that they should go,” said Dr. Drury, who has unearthed much new materi al in his research for biographies of Marcus Whitman and Henery Spaulding. The first white women in Ore gon were the wives of these two famed pioneers, who, with their coming in 1836 laid not only the groundwork for Christianity in the Northwest, but helped cast the die for progressive communi ties of which they dreamed but were never to see. "The work that has been done thus far in investi gating the lives of these lesser- known pioneers has hardly begun. We are still too young a people, jierhaps, but realization of the import of their problems will come in time,” the speaker de clared. He urged conservation of the old letters and relics that the northwest has to offer, and point ed to their study as a possible solution to more fully under standing the future. RACING PIGEONS Ten racing pigeons winged east ward Monday toward Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from Portland while their owners waited anxi ously the outcome of a wager. The fleet birds were released at Portland Sunday, less than 24 hours after they left Pittsburgh by airplane. They were last sight ed heading east-northeast, ap parently retracing the route of the plane. Ralph Warren, president of the Oregon pigeon club, said he be lieved it was the longest race at tempted by pigeon fanciers— Announcement On July 1st, we sold to Bernard Thaxton and Stella Depew all equipment and fixtures formerly owned by Nelson Motor Service and recentlv owned by the H. & H.
