THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2019 THE CHRONICLE — 17 SPORTS CHS Bulldogs: Week in review FOOTBALL to make quick, efficient passes to the feet and poor on-field communication allowing the Eagles to maintain possession of the ball and find multiple shot opportu- nities. In the second half, the Bulldogs came out with more hustle, better passes and more talk, and it all paid off as Grant Marshall headed in a corner kick by Cam Nguyen to tie the score about 15 minutes into the second half. Dawson Sharkey followed another corner kick by dribbling through two defenders and scoring what appeared to be the go-ahead goal for Creswell, but it was called back on a foul. Both teams had other chances, but neither managed to score again. Game: at Oakland, Oct. 18 Results: Despite attempting to ride the momentum of their Oct. 10 Homecoming victory over Central Linn, the Bulldogs lost to the Oakers, 35-7. Recap: The Oakers led 14-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 at the half. The Bulldogs scored in the third quarter, as QB Dallton Dewey made a 20-yard TD run and Nano Giffen added the PAT. Oakland added a final TD in the fourth. Oakland QB Conrad James threw for 260 yards and four TDs – three to RB Corbin Picknell. Creswell punted only once and failed on several fourth-down attempts. On offense, the Dawgs got some good drives going, “but every time we needed a big play, we had a bad snap, or a penalty called against us,” said coach Scott Worsham. Creswell stats: Each team had 10 to 12 shots on goal, and Creswell goalkeeper Jayden Pratt made 14 saves in the game. “Jayden had some phenomenal saves,” said coach Brandi Wittenborn. Reflections: “One of our biggest problems in this game and this season has been finishing when we’re right there in front of the goal – and we’ve still been working on cleaning up our passing and our communication,” Wittenborn said. “As a team, we’ve had a really emo- tional season with lots of personal stuff happening and lots of injuries and illnesses, so we’re a little beaten up; but I’m hoping we can come back strong and win our final games – especially this Thursday on Senior Night.” Creswell offensive stats: Dewey completed 6-of-14 passes for 103 yards. Tyler Nicol made 2 catches for 51 yards. Rushing, Dewey made 24 attempts for 55 yards, with 1 TD and 1 fumble. Caleb Wilson made 12 rushes for 47 yards. Creswell defensive stats: Wilson made 11 tackles (1 for loss) and 1 fumble recovery. Anthony Cox made 6 tackles, Logan Johnson had 5 tackles (2 for loss) and Connor Hanson had 3 tackles and a third-quarter interception. GIRLS’ SOCCER Reflections: “We knew we needed to shut down their sweep, and we did a pretty good job of that, but their QB could throw, too; he threw a lot of great passes, for four of their five touchdowns. We got beat on some deep money balls that got past our defensive backs and hurt us for sure,” Worsham said. Game: at Santiam Christian, Oct. 17 Results: The Lady Bulldogs – now 0-5 in league and 0-10 overall – fell to the Eagles 3-0. Recap: The game was played in a torrential downpour. Fifth-ranked Santiam Christian – undefeated in league at 6-0 and is 11-0-1 overall – scored within the first 10 minutes and made another midway through the first half for a 2-0 halftime lead. SC sent in a final goal with about 10 minutes remaining. Defenders Gracelyn Ehrich, Brielle Brick and Riley Lamm “played extremely well the entire game,” said coach Dan Smathers. “Gracelyn’s goal kicks were tremendous – they’d go almost to mid- field.” Addie Cortez also came up from JV and played significant minutes. The Lady Dawgs were without the injured Genesis Velazquez and Shelby Lamm and Velazquez’s loss was particularly costly: “Genesis is one of our main midfielders, running and passing well,” Smathers said. “We’re already struggling offensively, and this made that struggle even harder.” VOLLEYBALL Game: vs Pleasant Hill, Oct. 17 Results: With top hitter Breanna Dapron ill and on the bench for most of the match, the then-second-ranked Lady Dawgs lost the first set 23-25 but won the next three, 25-13, 25-19, 25-22. Recap: The first set was tied repeatedly and there were a number of long rallies in each set. Creswell generally passed serve well and served tough, with aces by several players in each set. Creswell stats: Kylee Whitson paced Creswell with 18 kills. “She played really well,” said coach Anna Baltrusch. Sarah Lanz had 6 kills and 5 aces. Jane Marquess had 27 digs and 4 aces; Jenessa Mallory provided 23 assists; and Emme Whitson and Makaela Seiber each had 2 stuff blocks. Reflections: “The girls played really well, and Pleasant Hill was playing really well,” Baltrusch said. “With Breanna out the first two sets and not going in until the last few points of the third set we’d made some lineup changes, and the girls adjusted to it.” Game: at Cascade Christian, Oct. 19 Results: The Lady Dawgs, who dropped from second to third in 3A state rankings following the match, were swept by the sixth-ranked Challengers in three straight sets: 27-29, 20-25, 7-25. Recap: Creswell had players out sick and missing prac- tices, so there were different lineups in each set, and The Bulldogs' Bailey Hutchinson gets a block for Creswell against Pleasant Hill. Team USA brought home 29 medals from the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, and those medalists will all start their journey to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games right here in Eugene and the southern Willamette Valley. The “Hayward magic” will be buzz- ing in only eight months, and fans will want to be a part of it. “Join the crowd that lifts up the athletes like no other crowd on the planet,” Track Town offi cials said. Reflections: “We’re still trying to learn how to manu- facture offense and score some goals and take some pressure off our defense," Smathers said. To better accommodate athletes seek- ing to compete in both the 100m and the long jump, USA Track & Field (USATF) announced the following competition updates: The long jump and triple jump competitions have been adjusted in the schedule with the men’s and women’s triple jumps to be contested on Days 1-2-3 (June 19-21 ) and the Long Jumps contested on Days 4, 7 and 10 (June 22, 25, 28). – Compiled by Gini Davis Athlete of the Week The cross country team heads into the Special District 4 3A Boys and 3A/2A/1A Girls Cross-Country fi nals on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The meet begins at 12:15 p.m., and will take place at Lane Community College in Eugene. Creswell’s top girls’ runner, freshman Leona Marquess, has the fourth-fastest 5k in girls’ SD-4 going into district cham- pionships. Congratulations, Leona, and best of luck in Districts!
