12 schools march19 2020 Sister’s Memorial Scholarship and Fun Run Super Scorers! A big shout out to Cathy Ward and Karen Roberts for their dedication to the Vernonia Schools Athletic programs, helping run the scoreboard, clocks, and keeping stats for the teams. Karen has been helping with statistics Dana Hyde and Jana Titus, two Vernonia School District employees, are again seeking contributions for the Sister’s Memorial Scholarship, to be given to de- serving Vernonia High School graduating seniors this spring. The Sister’s Memorial Scholar- ship was started in 2014 and honors Hyde’s sister Sheri Wilson and Titus’s sister Kari Titus, who both lost battles with cancer. This year the scholarship is start- ing what they hope will be a new tradition with the Sister’s Memorial Fun Run, a 5k walk/run and 10k run, on June 6, 2020. The run is being organized by VHS junior Jenna Handgard (right) for her senior proj- ect next year. To support the Sister’s Memorial Scholarship and this year’s Fun Run, send checks to Vernonia High School, c/o Dana Hyde, 1000 Missouri Avenue, Vernonia, OR 97064. Tax ID # 93-6000336 and scoring for volleyball, basketball, and baseball for over 30 years, and says in all those years she’s only missed one game. Cathy has been helping out for about 15 years. ASSE Seeks Host Families for High School Exchange Students ASSE Student Exchange Programs is now looking for Ameri- can families to host high school stu- dents from Eurasia, Germany, and countries with significant Muslim population. All these exceptional students have received scholar- ships through the U.S. State De- partment-sponsored programs: Fu- ture Leaders Exchange Pro- gram (FLEX), Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX), and Kennedy Lugar Youth Ex- change and Study Program (YES). These scholarship recipients will spend an academic year in the U.S. The historic U.S. State Department programs seek to foster democracy and values inherent in a free mar- ket economy. Your support of these students and programs like this re- inforces the United States’ commit- ment to education and opportunity throughout the world. ASSE is currently seeking host families for these well-qual- ified, bright, motivated and well- screened students coming from vari- ous parts of the world, including; Latvia, Ukraine, Poland, Egypt, Jor- dan, Ghana, and Germany. By living with local host families and attend- ing local high schools, these scholar- ship students acquire an understand- ing of American values and build on leadership skills.
