At the May 7, 2018 City Council Meet- ing: Vernonia Swears In New Police Of- ficer – Vernonia’s newest member of the Police Department, Michael Wal- ter, took the Oath of Office in front of a room packed with fam- ily and friends. Walter’s wife Jeanette Walter had the honor of pinning on his badge. Later in the meeting, Vernonia Police Chief Mike Conner told the Council that Walter is new to law enforcement and that he and his family live in Vernonia. Council Approves Amended Waste Management Fees – Council passed Resolution 6-18 that allows Waste Man- agement to amend their fees for garbage and recycling collection. Rates will increase about $1.00-$2.50 per month, depending on the size of the customer’s container and frequency of service. Board Approves Street Vacation Re- quest – Following a public hearing at which there was no testimony either in favor or against, the Board approved a request by Joe Riley to vacate three sepa- rate sections of 3 rd Street in order to place a proposed home optimally on a prop- erty. City Planner Matt Straite had recommended approval of the applica- tion. Positions Open for City Council – City Recorder Stephanie Borst announced that three City Council positions will be up for election on November 6, 2018. Council Approves Street Closure for July 4 th – Council approved a request by the Intercultural Society of Vernonia to close Park Drive on July 4 from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm for a concert in Hawkins Park as part of the Great American Bash celebration. Topics From the Floor – Dale Webb told the Council he is monitoring the new lake pump installed by ODFW and that he is working with ODFW staff to make sure the pump is operating cor- rectly. Janice McGuire provided an update on progress by a citizen group to save the Greenman Field grandstands. McGuire said the group will present to the Council at their next meeting a busi- ness plan for use of the grandstands, in- cluding funding for maintenance, and an agreement with a non-profit. Dennis Chadek told the Board he is disappointed in the conditions at the old Lincoln School. Chadek pointed out the Council voted to change the zon- ing at the property to Commercial and the trailer restoration business that now operates from the site continues to get worse, with more old trailers and even a boat being parked on the property. Randy Ward said he is very im- pressed with the work being done by Park Host James McMahon to clean up Airport Park. Ward said he hoped more people would use this park. Stacey Pelster raised concerns about parking on Bridge Street, espe- cially cars that are parked overnight or even for several days and don’t move. She suggested limiting the length of time cars can park in downtown. City Administrator Report – City Administrator Josette Mitchell told the Council a grant application has been submitted to Oregon Parks and Recre- ation Department for the Vernonia Dog Park Project. Council later passed Reso- lution 5-18 authorizing the City to apply for the grant. Mitchell said the new carpet has been installed in the Library. Because the colors did not match in the different rolls of carpet that were used, the City is negotiating with the installation com- pany to find a solution. Mitchell said an easement has been signed by the owner of the Lincoln School property. City staff will now in- stall a storm drain line to alleviate a wa- ter run off issue from the property. Mitchell said the City will be- gin planting Memorial trees in Spencer Park the week of May 21. She said there are still trees and spots that can be spon- sored. She also said six trees would be planted at the Memorial Cemetery sur- rounding the new Urn Garden.
