12 schools september21 2017 VHS Fall Sports Report Football – Logger’s second year head coach Reed Watson is upbeat and opti- mistic about his team’s chances this year. The Loggers have a 1-2 record in non league play, with just one more game left on the schedule on Friday, September 22 at home against Culver, before starting Northwest League play. Watson says he thinks Vernonia has a good chance to make the state playoffs this year. “We have a ton of potential and we will win games this year and I think we can compete for the league title,” says Watson. “This group is highly competi- tive with a lot of fighters on the team.” The Loggers opened their sea- son with a home loss to Colton, followed by a solid 28-6 home win over Warren- ton. On September 15 Vernonia trav- eled to Central Linn where they fell 34- 22. Senior Gaven Everett lines up as a fullback/tight end in various formations and is a dangerous weapon through the air. “Josh is always exciting to watch, and Gaven plays great both ways for us,” says Watson. Jake Patton has been a leader on the defense. “Jake is a hard hitter who always brings it every time,” says Wat- son. Everett has also been the leading tackler on defense. Watson says the Loggers have been their own worst enemy in their two losses, spotting both Colton and Central Linn early leads before battling back and either out playing them or playing them evenly. “Our starts have been slow and we’re trying to figure that out,” says Watson. Watson says he has instituted a new program this year, “Military Mo- ment,” where before each game and each practice he introduces the team to a historic military hero, reads them a pro- file, and talks about why that person is a hero and what they did for their coun- try. “It gets the team in the right mind frame and shows incredible courage and bravery which I try to instill before we start,” explains Watson. “It honors our freedom and the soldiers themselves, and it reminds our players that they are blessed to be playing this game. I think it’s motivated a lot of them.” The Loggers travel to Gaston on September 30, host Nestucca on October 6 for their homecoming game, and travel for a tough matchup against Knappa on October 13. “I think this team has a lot of heart and is going to start winning,” says Watson. Volleyball – Head coach Teresa Wil- liams has a balanced and talented team that should be in the thick of the North- west League battle this year. After a mixed early start, which finds the Lady Loggers with a 6-5 record overall, the team has found its rhythm #7 Morgan Harral up for the block and is now 4-0 in league play after a hard fought 3-0 win over Delphian on continued on page 13 Receive a $5 off coupon Bighorn Logging since 1981 Contract Logging 503-324-2422 Free Estimates Timber Purchases Timber Management Oregon Professional Logger certified since 1996 New Day Massage and Bodyworks Theraputic Massage Specializing in • Auto/Work Injury Rehabilitation • Medical Massage Cupping • Manual Lymph Drainage • Nutritional Counseling • Post Mastectomy Care • Oncology Support • Sauna on-site Heather Lewis, LMT, LMP, CLT, NT 847 Madison Avenue, Vernonia For appointments call: 503-429-4677 Insurance accepted #10732 V ernonia C hristian C hurch Everyone is welcome in our vibrant & active community!
