in other words september21 2017 11 Inside Our Movies: About Time (2013) By Jim Bryson Time travel is a difficult tool to use when one is making film. In all the time travel movies that I love there are always little slips, things that don’t work, plot holes. The best films of this genre are able to make these holes much smaller. Although About Time (2013) does not avoid the potholes of time travel it is still a heart warming story about love and the meaning of life. About Time (2013) is a story of a young English man, Tim, who is told by his eccentric father on his 21 st birthday that all the men in their family can time travel throughout their personal timeline/memory. Very quickly he and the film writers tell you that this power is to be used for love. You know, because this is a romantic comedy, so... Tim meets a beautiful American girl, Mary, and immediatly falls in love. It does take Tim a little while to understand his new time traveling power and he finds that he can change history by his actions. His love story and his eventual discovery of the meaning of life and the best way to live it are at the heart of this story. About Time (2013) is directed by Richard Curtis, a Kiwi film director best know for Love Actually (2003) and Notting Hill (1999) both of which are fine examples of both the Romantic Comedy genre and English/British film. This film stars Domhall Gleeson (Tim) and Rachal McAdams (Mary), the token “American” character. Supporting roles are carried quite well by Bill Nighy and Lindsay Duncan as Tim’s parents. I was particularly suprised to see a 23 year old Margo Robbie looking very different than she did in her next film, Wolf of Wall Street (2013). The acting in this film is very fine. All the actors that I’ve mentioned give stand out performances. Richard same vein, there are plot turns that can catch the viewer unaware if you are not paying attention. Although the acting, directing, editing and sound track of this film are all steller, I couldn’t help but get hung up on the glaring inconsistencies in the story that stem from the concept of time travel. Even so, if you enjoy time travel stories or are in the mood for a sweet romatic story, and are willing to look past a few minor details, you might give this film a try. Quite frankly, if I had the power to change my own timeline I think I might go back and watch a different film. Fortunately, there are lots of other films, many much better, available at our local Vernonia Library. Curtis did the best job any director could have done with this script, after all he did write it himself. However, time travel is a tricky thing to write. And there are inconsistencies with Tim’s timeline as he navigates his personal history. In the Where Do You Read the Voice?
