12 schools april20 2017 VHS Spring Sports Report Baseball – Head coach Joe Walters has a veteran squad this season, which he expects will challenge for the district championship and hopefully qualify for the state tournament. “This is a really strong group,” says Walters. Walters has three experienced seniors he can send out to the mound in Hayden Cieloha, Bailey Morrison and Brett Elliott and says Cieloha has been throwing the ball extremely well early in the season. “Hayden is locating his pitches and he’s confident on the mound,” says Walters. Walters can also use Brenden Mullikin when needed. Offensively, the entire team has been hitting the ball well, with Elliot, Morrison, Mullikin, Cieloha and freshman Gunnar Harral leading the team. Defensively Gaven Everett is behind the plate, with Elliott at first base, Mullikin at second, either Cieloha or Morrison at short stop, and Harral starting at third in the infield. “Brenden Mullikin has a great head for the game and is just a great natural baseball player,” says Walters. “He can make it look so easy.” In the outfield, Jake Patton is starting in left, Tristan Adams in center, and Jake Rice and Adam Hahn are sharing duties in right. “Tristan Adams is probably one of the best outfielders in our league this year,” said Walters. “He made some incredible plays early in the season.” The Loggers are 5-3 on the season so far, after winning two of three games against Nestucca to open league play, defeating the Pirates 5-1 and 6-4, while losing 9-8. The Loggers are curerntly ranked #11 in OSAA rankings, one spot behind league rival and perennial favorite Knappa. Vernonia will host Neah-Kah- Nie on April 28 in a doubleheader and play Gaston at home on May 2. Softball – The Lady Loggers are off to a good start and seem to be playing good ball this season. Vernonia had a strong preseason, defeating Colton 22-2, Portland Christian/Columbia Christian 26-2, and St. Paul 14-2, before falling to Toledo 15-13. The Lady Loggers opened league play with a 17-0 shutout of Nestucca and are currently ranked #13 in OSAA 2A with a 4-1 record. Vernonia will face Neah-Kah- Nie in a home doubleheader on April 28, Warrenton/Jewell at home on Saturday, April 29 at 1:00 pm, and Gaston at home on May 2. Track and Field – “It will be very difficult to match last year’s 4th place finish at the State Meet and our record- setting performance in the 4x100,” says head coach Byron Brown. “However, there is a lot of talent on this year’s team and it’s probably a deeper team.” For the boys, Clay Sullivan is currently leading the Northwest League (NWL) in the 200 meters, 110 hurdles, and long jump. He is ranked 2nd in the 100 meters and the 300 hurdles and “... is on his way to an outstanding season,” say Brown. Brett Jones is ranked #1 in high jump, Nathan Colot is leading in the 800 meters, and Javier Arenas Oliver is 2nd in the triple jump and 3rd in the pole vault. Ben Fleck and Ben Schulte are developing well under new volunteer coach John Roady who is working with throwers and jumpers. For the girls, Lene Jacobsen is leading the NWL in the 200 meters and the high jump, Lauren and Megan Ely are 1st and 2nd in the javelin and Lauren is also 2nd in the 800. Pauline Sandweg is 2nd in the 300 hurdles. Kathy Will is 2nd in the 3K. District state-qualifying will be held on May 12 and 13 at Portland Christian.
