6 community news march2 2017 Mind the Gaps: How Gender Shapes Our Lives From the moment we are born, gender shapes every aspect of our lives: our interests, opportunities, and how we move through the world. In the twenty- fi rst century, disparities among the gen- ders still prevail, especially the intersec- tions of race, class, immigration status, and geography. What can these disparities tell us about society’s values and priori- ties? How can we better understand the complexities of gender’s effects on our daily lives and identities? This is the focus of “Mind the Gaps: How Gen- der Shapes Our Lives,” a free conversation with Jade Aguilar on Thursday, March 23, 6:30 pm at the Verno- nia Public Library. This program is hosted by the Friends of the Vernonia Library and sponsored by Oregon Humanities, and is part of Oregon Humanities’ statewide Conversation Project. Aguilar is an assistant professor of so- ciology and women’s and gender studies at Willamette University. Her broad areas of study are gender, sexuality, and family, and her main area of focus is the study of intentional communities. Through the Conversation Project, Oregon Humanities offers free programs that engage commu- nity members in thoughtful, challenging conversations about ideas critical to our daily lives and our state’s fu- ture.
