To the Editor, I have something I want to get off my chest, and as a former Mayor, I feel qualified to say it. I want you to know the City is running wonderfully!! WE have working for us a fabulous staff, including City Hall, Public Works, The Library, and the Police Dept. One of the reasons for our success is due to a Council and Mayor who are thoughtful and appreciate who pays the bills. They spend our money wisely. But, most of all, we have a whiz of a whiz for a City Administrator in Josette Mitchell. I can sing her praises on so many levels. We are very fortunate. So, if the opportunity presents itself, and you are so inclined, take a moment to thank those who are working so hard to make Vernonia the lovely place we live in. I have worked in this community for over ten years, and although we don’t live in town, I have always felt a part of it. This letter is long overdue. There are too many names to list, so I want to thank the entire community for the love, support, and prayers that have been sent our way. We don’t attend church, but you would think we did with the outpouring of prayers and cards we have received through them. I am certain they have helped. I have always felt like a giving person, but I learned how important it is to also be a gracious recipient as others can then feel the fulfillment of giving. It does come naturally to many in this community. Thank you. Having been here for a while I have seen others go through severe hardships, and the people of Vernonia always came through for them. Your hearts are in the right place, we need each other! I guess along with thank you, I want to encourage everyone to be nice to each other. Being nice to people really pays off. Being a good neighbor, holding a door for someone, offering to help when you see a need, or simply sharing a smile and a kind word, all can make a difference in someone’s life. To the Editor, I really, really, really don’t want this job! If WOEC members want a real shot at lower electric rates, VOTE FOR NICK GALADAY as District 5 Director! It’s election-time. Keep an eye out for the WOEC ballot in the mail! The mailing is ordinary, not particularly noticeable. You’ll have to watch for it. What is important is that you vote!! Usually, only very few of the several thousand members vote. Directors stay in office for years, election after election, simply because the same two or three hundred people vote each year. Make this time different. Time to bring WOEC into the 21st century. WOEC needs new blood. After watching the presidential campaign party conventions Bev and I got into a discussion about the difference between ambition and avarice. And the fact anyone seeking to become a public servant at any level has to have at least a little ambition. I, on the other hand, have unlimited ennui! And that’s not funny, if you equate my level of ennui with laziness. I’m no one to be running for public service! Columbia Humane Society Featured Pet Draco has been in the shelter system going on a year. He came to us in January and was adopted for a couple weeks but returned for not sharing toys with the other dog in the home. He would do best in an adult home with no other pets. He is a cattle dog/pitbull mix and is approxi- mately 3 years old. He is a loyal dog with lots of love to give.
