10 schools june2 2016 Vernonia High School Receives Exchange Year Global Excellence Award Vernonia High School received national recognition for excellence in global education from EF High School Exchange Year, the leader in high school exchange. The EF High School Exchange Year Global Education Excellence Award is presented annually to high schools that demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to international understanding and global awareness. Vernonia High School was one of a select group of high schools recognized across the United States for the 2015-16 school year. Vernonia High School has shown an outstanding commitment to offering a global education. By welcoming exchange students into the classrooms, Vernonia High School has created new and unique learning opportunities not just for the exchange students, but for American students and faculty as well. This year Vernonia High School welcomed one EF High School Exchange Year student. Not only was Elisabeth Kreuter accepted into the school, but she also became an integral part of the school’s academic and extracurricular life, involving the greater community in the exchange program. Liz, from Germany, was able to take part in the Equestrian Club and be a cheerleader for the high school sports program. Her host parents, Kinnell and Jon Steward, felt very lucky to have Liz, since she is the sister of one of their previous exchange students. Local exchange coordinator, Gail Moore, added, “We thank Vernonia High School for welcoming this year’s student. The community and Exchange student Liz Kreuter with VHS principal Nate Underwood. visiting student shared an unforgettable experience thanks to the generosity of Vernonia Schools’ administration, teachers, students and families. Jr. Salmon Auction Raises Funds for Arts Programs The Vernonia community came together with the Vernonia Schools arts programs once again on May 26 for the Junior Salmon Auction. Vernonia High School (VHS) students created personlized art projects on wooden salmon cutouts which were auctioned off, along with hand painted furniture pieces. Sponsored by Vernonia Hands On Art, the auction raised $2,850, with the majority of the funds going to support VHS arts programs and art scholarships. The winners of the People’s Choice Awards were: 1 st place - Josephine Lassen, 2 nd place – Odessa Roberts, 3 rd Place – Joud Kalaf and Paige Smith.
