12 obituaries/classified ads august6 2015 In Memory of... Faith M. Reynolds Faith M. Reynolds, age 100, a longtime and third generation resident of Vernonia, died Thursday morning, July 23, 2015 at the Canfield Place Retirement Center in Beaverton, Oregon. A Funeral Service in celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Grace Family Fellowship, 967 State Avenue in Vernonia. A reception of light refreshments will immediately follow in the church. Private Immediate Family Interment will be held later in the week at the Rose City Cemetery, 5625 NE Fremont Street in Portland. Faith Melinda Reynolds was born in Stanfield, Oregon, the daughter of decendents of pioneer families, on May 17, 1915. Her parents were Elmer and Ethel (Galloway) Hiatt. She was raised in Vernonia and Portland and was a member of Vernonia’s class of ’33, serving as president of her freshman class. She later received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Portland State University in 1964 after returning to college in the 1960s when she was in her 40s. Faith was united in marriage to Ralph Ray “Boomer” Reynolds on June 24, 1933 in Portland, Oregon; and following their marriage they made their home in Vernonia, moving to their Rose Avenue house in 1938, which she sold after 76 years last summer, 2014. Faith was preceded in death by her husband Ralph on April 11, 1988 in Vernonia after more than fifty-four years of marriage. She continued living in Vernonia until 2012 when she moved to the valley at age 97 to live nearer to her daughter and son-in-law. Faith taught at both Lincoln and Washington grade schools as an elementary school teacher for the Vernonia School District, teaching kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades from 1962 – 1978. During World War II, she contributed to the war effort by watching for planes in the towers located in the forested areas around Vernonia and she knitted wool socks for soldiers who were serving in the war. Also during the war her older brother served in the Army in Europe and her younger brother served in the Air Force in the Pacific. While living in Vernonia, Faith and Ralph attended and were active in the Vernonia Evangelical Church and the Order of The Eastern Star and The Freemasonry. In addition, Faith was a member of The Vernonia Study Club and an active participant in the Oregon State Home Extension Service programs. In later life, Faith was also a member of P.E.O.; the Vernonia Senior Center; The Friends of the Library; the Vernonia Pioneer Museum; and did volunteer work for the Smokey the Bear Program for Fire Safety. Among her special interests she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, gardening, canning, sewing, reading, and participating and supporting her family in their many projects and activities. Faith was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Ethel (Galloway) Hiatt; her two brothers, Virgil Gerald Hiatt and Clifton Nathan Hiatt, both graduates of Vernonia High School, and her sister Velma Hiatt who died in infancy. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Marjorie (Reynolds) and John Carson of Portland, Oregon and her son and daughter-in-law Roy Reynolds and Denny Martin of Healdsburg, California. Both of her children graduated from Vernonia High School. Also surviving are her three grandchildren, Kaia (Carson) Hudson of Portland, Oregon; Andy and wife Kinh Reynolds of Portland, Oregon; and Jeremy Reynolds of Portland, Oregon; her seven great-grandchildren, Kate Reynolds, Claire Reynolds, Ryan Reynolds, Sarah Reynolds, Mira Reynolds, John Kenneth Carson, and Austin Allan Simmermaker; her great- great-grandson, Braxton Kenneth Carson, and two great-nieces and one great-nephew as well as numerous dear cousins and friends. Ken Nanson Ken Nanson passed away peacefully on July 18, 2015 of complications of dementia. He was a beloved orthodontist in Portland and Astoria for 40 years, and loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. B o r n in Missoula, MT, he was raised by his parents Victoria and Arthur Nanson in Vernonia, graduating from Vernonia High School in 1955, and going on to Oregon State College, where he played The Mist-Birkenfeld RFPD Board of Directors will meet August 18, 2015 at 7 pm at the Main Station, 12525 HWY 202, Mist, OR. The funeral was held on July 24 th at Vernonia High School at 1000 Missouri Street at 2:00 pm. Born in Portland to Dan and Katie Organ in 1981, John was brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord Jesus Christ. Eldest brother to Mark, Molly, Bonnie and Bill Organ, John was a natural leader to his siblings and friends. John was engaged to Chandra Hines and was a father to Chloe, Phoenix, Oliver and Gracelynn Marie. John attended Southwest Christian in Beaverton through the 6 th grade and then attended Tigard High School completing his GED in 2001. John enlisted in the Oregon Army National Guard and aided in the effort to recover New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and trained in Japan. Although he struggled greatly in his life, John was a provider, a hard worker and loved his family with his whole self. He is loved and will be missed throughout our lives.
