Pitts Sr. Ronnie Ray Maldonado, 18, of Vernonia graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego on January 23, 2015. (McDonald) Safranski; his sisters, Laura McDonald and Margaret Kemp. He was a member of the Vernonia Lions Club. Among his special interests he enjoyed bowling, roller skating, hunting, riding his Harley and especially fly fishing, his favorite fishing spot was the Deschutes River over in eastern Oregon. Kenneth worked as a paintmaker for Rodda Paint for over twenty eight years. Survivors include his wife Sharon Kathleen Pitts, of Vernonia, Oregon; his four children and their spouses, Kimberly and Ben Harding of Portland, Oregon, Kenneth Jr. of Portland, Oregon, Kevin and Kera Pitts of Astoria, Oregon, Katie and JC of Fairview, Oregon; his sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Dick Cato, of Portland, Oregon and his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ellen Pitts, of Brightwood, Oregon. Also surviving are his eleven grandchildren, Shayla, Dillon, Eric, Hannah, Nikolaus, Christian, Kylee, McKenzie, Austin, Nathan, and Corey, three great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews, Cynthia, Greg, Elizabeth, Brian, Kristina, Jennifer, and Jason. Tualatin Valley Funeral Alternatives entrusted with the arrangements. Kenneth Pitts, 71, a resident of the Vernonia community, died Thursday morning, February 19, 2015 at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held on March 14, 2015 from noon-4 pm at the Cabin in Vernonia, 901 Park Drive in Vernonia, with Pastor Grant Williams, presiding. Kenneth George Pitts, Sr. was born on December 19, 1943 in Portland Oregon, the son of the late Arnold Wayne Pitts and the late Bella (McDonald) Safranski. He was raised and received his education in Portland, Oregon, having been a graduate of Cleveland High School class of 1962. He was united in marriage to Sharon Kathleen McCreadie, on May 26, 1984 in Portland Oregon. They celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary this past May. Following their marriage they made their home in West Linn until moving to Vernonia in Forrest “Bud” L. Hemeon 1987. He was preceded in death by January 1, 1919- February 26, 2015 his parents, Arnold Pitts and Bella Private Maldonado successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego as one of 73 recruits in Training Platoon 2122. While in recruit training Private Maldonado achieved Sharp Shooter. Following his ten days home on leave he reported to Camp Pendleton for one month at Military Combat Training. Private Maldonado will graduate MCT March 3rd. He will then attend Military Occupation Specialty school in North Carolina, New River Marine Base, where he will learn to work on Ospreys Helicopters. After graduating this schooling he is uncertain where his MOS duty will be. Bud was born January 1, 1919 in Somerville Massachusetts, to Forrest C. and Rhoda Hemeon. Bud had to quit school in the 11th grade due to his father’s illness. He then helped with the running of Hemeon Trucking with his sister, Rhoda. At the age of 19, he moved to Hollywood, California where he began work as a Western Union Boy delivering telegrams. During this time, Bud enjoyed collecting hundreds of autographs from the stars of that era. Bud was 20 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a Boatman’s Mate, on the U.S.S. Los Angeles, a heavy cruiser. During WWII he traveled to North Africa & Europe. He was honorably discharged in September of 1945. Bud met and married his wife of 65 years, Jeri on July 14, 1949 in Los Angeles, California. They lived in San Diego, California, Salmon, Idaho, and then settled at their current ranch in Mist, Oregon in 1962 with their three children. Bud started driving truck for Allied JH, and then later for Crown Zellerbach where he retired. He then bought a dump truck and started up “Hemeon Trucking.” In his retirement, Bud enjoyed farming, ranching, and especially tending his cows. He loved spending time with his family, and traveling with Jeri and friends. He was an avid cribbage player, who also enjoyed an occasional “Old Forester.” The funeral is scheduled for March 7th at 1:00 PM at the Mist School Gymnasium, with a potluck to follow. Pastor Tim Teele will officiate the ceremony. The family will be having a graveside service at a later date. All are welcome to come and celebrate Bud’s life.
