community Candidate Questionnaire and Responses Oregon. During my years of practice I have spent thousands of hours in trial work, and been in various Court trying all kinds of cases. I know the rules of procedure and evidence, am the most highly qualified candidate and firm and fair. My service to the Oregon community includes: Elected member of the Oregon State Board of Bar Governors, and Columbia River Public Utility District Board, and St Helens School Board, the Columbia Education Service District and Port of St. Helens, Member of the Oregon Judicial Fitness Commission where I sat in judgment upon the conduct of judges, including one Oregon Supreme Court Justice. Charter Member of Oregon Women Lawyers formed in 1989. Why are you running for this position? including me. I think about how to put people in better jobs, how to make us as a community attractive to industry, how to influence industry and policy. For instance; all the DEQ standards and regulations putting the boot on the neck of American Paper making ? Require a 30% environmental tariff on paper making in other countries until they meet American DEQ standards from power they use in the process to the fork lift loading the ship for export. Excessive regulation, exorbitant taxation, and bureaucratic nonsense need to be scrutinized and eliminated. Legal language needs to be reduced and clarified. I can do that. Our forefathers knew about the proclivities of power in the hands of clumsy government. The Constitution, the Bill of Rights; they were established to guide us as a free people. Many of the amendments are there to protect us from a muscular government. In this age of homeland security, the NSA, and numerous emergency powers granted to government officials, the Constitution takes on a new urgency in its need to be reviewed and understood as the document that stands as a wall protecting our right to be free. Henry Heimuller - I am passionate about this position and the service that I provide for the residents of our county. This position requires someone who is a problem solver, who has excellent listening skills and the ability to work Jason Heym - I love Columbia County with people from and want to improve the court system every walk of life. to make it a true public service by improving the experience of the average citizen. My campaign is about the community and how I can dedicate myself to Columbia County to improve the lives of my neighbors. Cathleen Callahan - My passion is to help people realize success in their lives. Being thrust (voluntarily or involuntarily) in an adversarial position in the court system is extremely demanding and traumatic. Clearly, individuals are not at their best under these circumstances. My hands-on legal experience in a wide-ranging selection of law, my courtroom experience and my extensive community service have given me the knowledge and skills to assist people and the community in the resolution of legal issues. Jean Martwick - I love serving Columbia County. I did not hesitate to apply for this position. From my earliest aspirations in my legal career, I recognized that the highest role was that of judge - the arbiter of fairness. It is a position of great trust and responsibility, which I am honored to be in. Jenefer Grant - I love my job, and this County. Agnes Peterson - I filed to improve the quality of justice in Columbia County, Oregon. When I filed the Secretary of State accused me of being over 75 years of age and declared me not qualified because of that. The application form had no question about date of birth or age on it. ORS 3.041 has no such qualification to run for Circuit Court Judge. Then the State refused to place my name in the voter’s pamphlet even though I paid $600.00 to be included in it. Recently they said they would refund this $600.00 in about 2 weeks. They have had the money since March 7, 2014. The race is one where I seek votes as a write-in candidate and I will pursue a path of changing and asking the Courts to declare unconstitutional Oregon’s discrimination toward Judges who reach their 75 th birthday. My dear friend, the first black woman judge in Oregon, Mercedes Diez, wanted to fight this back in 1991. Both Mercedes and I were charter members of Oregon Women Lawyers. Oregon Women Lawyers’ Mission is to transform the practice of law and ensure justice and equality by advancing women and minorities in the legal profession. What differentiates you from other candidates? Why should someone vote for you? Henry Heimuller - I am a public servant at heart. I have no individual agenda, as has been demonstrated in my years of service, both in this position and the many volunteer positions that I have held and continue to hold. I have the distinct ability to know my limitations and the limitations of the position. I always make sure my decisions are weighed with what will be best for our county overall, and are within the laws of the land.
