16 obituaries/classified ads february6 2014 In Memory of... Pauline Gladys King Pauline Gladys King passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Alpine Springs Assisted Living in Eugene. She was born in Renton, WA on March 7, 1919 to Earl Dial and Gladys Ferres. The family (she had an older brother, Robert) lived on a homestead near Cut Bank, Montana. When she was three, the family moved to The Dalles, OR and then Rainier prior to moving to Vernonia where her father went to work at the mill after helping to build it. She lived in a house her father built in Vernonia after living in a tar paper shack prior to this since housing in Vernonia was scarce. She lived in Vernonia until the fourth grade when she moved back to Montana with her mother and brother after her parents divorced. She moved back to Vernonia during her junior year of high school and stayed some sixty-six years. Her home was flooded twice and it was after the last flood that she moved to Florence for several years, and then Eugene for the last year of her life. In 1941 she married Earl King and had four children- Bonnie King, who died in infancy, Christine Redmond, Marilyn Fennell and Donald King. Her family was very important to her and at the time of her death, her family had grown from three children to seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Among her interests were word games, football, the Senior Center, the Pioneer Museum, and her flowers. Her activities included PEO, the Vernonia Study Club, the Cemetery Beautification Committee, and the Christian Church where she co-chaired feeding the film crew and actors for the Ring of Fire when they were filming in Vernonia. Many people will remember her as a teachers’ aide and then secretary for the grade school, a 4H leader, and a regular at the Vernonia Senior Center especially when the Golden Oldies played. She always loved music and dancing. We will be celebrating her life on February 15, 2014 at the Vernonia Scout Cabin at 1:00 PM.
