12 obituaries/classified ads january2 2014 In Memory of... Wallace (Wally) W. Thomas Jr. Wallace (Wally) W. Thomas Jr., 79, a resident of Vernonia, Oregon, died Tuesday morning, December 10, 2013 at a care facility in Forest Grove after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Private Cremation Rites were held in Forest Grove. Born January 19, 1934 in Portland, Oregon, son of Wallace Wilfred Thomas Sr. and Julia Ann (Shea) Thomas. He was raised in Astoria Oregon, graduating an honor student from Astoria High School in 1952. He was very active on the Football Team and upon his graduation he chose to use his football scholarship to attend Washington State University from among the many other scholarships he was offered. Wally was inducted into the Astoria High School Football Hall of Fame in 1997. He worked while continuing his education as a railroad worker, production control for Boeing, a logger, and a fisherman. After moving to Oregon he found employment at Leupold and Stevens and finished his degree in management. He then worked as an instructor of machine technology and math at Portland Community College for over eighteen years during which he received his teaching degree, and retired in 1996. Following his retirement, he worked as a Bus Driver for the Forest Grove School District for over ten years. Among his special interests, Wally enjoyed serving as the assistant coach for the Vernonia High School Football Team, most of his players call him Sarge to this day. He coached Pop Warner Football Teams in Beaverton and in California. He also enjoyed white water rafting and was a guide for several years. He attended many theater performances with his wife. He was a hunter, deep sea fisherman, and a sports fan. He also edited a great many textbooks even after his retirement. Wally was united in marriage to Jennifer L. Harrison in 1981 in Vancouver, Washington. They celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary this year, residing happily together just outside of Vernonia in the house they built together. He is preceded in death by his parents and two of his sons, William and Christian Thomas. Survivors include his wife, Jennifer L. Thomas, of Vernonia, Oregon; his children and their spouses, Kim Thomas-Clink, of Scappoose, Oregon; Laura Woodson, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Jessilyn and Evan Maxwell, of Grapeview, Washington; Sean and Sharon Thomas, of Aloha Oregon; Mariya and Doug Niemi, of Washougal, Washington; and David and Debbie Thomas, of Hillsboro, Oregon. Also surviving are his seventeen grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
