schools Vernonia School Board Report At the February 14, 2013 School Board Meeting: Topics From the Floor-Amy Cieloha spoke on two issues. She informed the School Board that approximately $6700 has been raised towards the purchase of playground equipment. Cieloha also expressed concerns about the doors to the building being locked after hours when there are activi- ties going on in the building. Cieloha said she felt it was unsafe and asked that something be changed. Superintendent Ken Cox responded and told Cieloha that the policy would be changed and that the front doors of the building would remain unlocked until 8:00 PM when there were activities in the building. Reports-Middle school students Chey- enne Farr-Smith and Pearl Cook updat- ed the Board on current studies in the middle school, about a trip that classes will be taking to Salem, the upcoming middle school dance on February 22 and the new Topper News. Dawn Plews provided the finan- cial report and a report on the recently completed audit. For the audit Plewes said that the District had basically re- ceived an A and that there were no sig- nificant deficiencies. James Brookins reported on the progress of the Loggerbots robotics team and stated that it is an outstanding program for the students and is receiving tremendous community support. Parent Susan Ely asked the Board to make a new shop building a priority. Brookins confirmed that the students that are part of the robotics program are not getting as much hands on work as they did last year without a shop to work in. Sherrie Ford reported on the Spencer Health and Wellness clinic which opened one month ago at the school and noted that they are seeing an average of eight patients each day they are open. Ford says the clinic is being well used and is at 75% capacity. Ford thanked school staff for their help and cooperation in making the clinic work and that she is working to make sure february21 2013 the clinic is seen as an asset and not a disruption because it is meeting a health care need. NSBA Trip to Washington D.C.-Board member Greg Kintz, who is a represen- tative to the Oregon School Boards As- sociation reported on his recent trip to the National School Boards Association meeting in Washington D.C. Kintz said he had the chance to meet federal rep- resentative staffers and enjoyed the trip and felt it was very worthwhile. Budget Calendar-The School Board will hold Budget Meetings on May 9 and May 23 and are scheduled to hold a Public Hearing on June 13. Calendar Change-The Board approved a change to the District Calendar to make up snow days that occurred on Decem- ber 18 and 19. The days will be made up on Friday April 26 and Friday May 3. Superintendents Report-Superinten- dent Ken Cox reported on several is- 13 sues. He noted that the greenhouse that will be constructed on school property is progressing. He also commented on the progress of the old school site demoli- tion. Cox also discussed that a litter is- sue around the school grounds has been raised by the community. Cox also had staff do some work on Texas Avenue to try to repair some damage that had been done there during construction. Cox told the Board that the high school band would be traveling to Salem to perform at the opening of the State Senate and would have a chance to meet with some legislators and would than head to Western Oregon University for a band clinic. Upcoming School Board Workshop- The Vernonia School Board will meet at the District office on February 28, 2013 for a workshop to discuss the potential purchase and moving of the old Middle School building to the new school cam- pus. Loggerbots Ready to Compete continued from page 12 In mid-February the team was putting some of the final touches on the robot. In a practice session the Logger- bots robot was accurately projecting Frisbees through their intended target from eighteen feet away and was able to lift itself off the ground far enough to score points. Conner Larke was the operator of the robot, Jacob Eyrrick was responsible for the computer pro- graming. Other students on the team are Bailey Wil- liams, Brad Ely, Meagan Ely, Kaitlyn Eyrrick, Sarah Wagner, Heather Patton, Drew Chaney, Nicki Rainbolt, Tim Jennings, Andrew Jennings, and Garrett Mullikin and Jeffrey Goodman The VHS students have a group of dedicated adult mentors who have been assisting them with the project. Jack Finzel has provided use of his home shop for fabrication since the school currently does not have a metal shop. Other mentors have helped the students with electrical and mechanical issues. The Loggerbots team has been meeting week- ly on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, as well as Saturday’s during the day. The students have created their own website to promote their project. They have already gained sponsorship from NASA and several local businesses including A-Jax Ma- Robotics mentors Mitch Siebert and Daniel Mullikin work chine, Procraft, TNW with Quintin Skanes.
