Vernonia School Board Report
At the February 14, 2013 School
Board Meeting:
Topics From the Floor-Amy Cieloha
spoke on two issues. She informed the
School Board that approximately $6700
has been raised towards the purchase of
playground equipment.
Cieloha also expressed concerns
about the doors to the building being
locked after hours when there are activi-
ties going on in the building. Cieloha
said she felt it was unsafe and asked that
something be changed. Superintendent
Ken Cox responded and told Cieloha that
the policy would be changed and that the
front doors of the building would remain
unlocked until 8:00 PM when there were
activities in the building.
Reports-Middle school students Chey-
enne Farr-Smith and Pearl Cook updat-
ed the Board on current studies in the
middle school, about a trip that classes
will be taking to Salem, the upcoming
middle school dance on February 22 and
the new Topper News.
Dawn Plews provided the finan-
cial report and a report on the recently
completed audit. For the audit Plewes
said that the District had basically re-
ceived an A and that there were no sig-
nificant deficiencies.
James Brookins reported on
the progress of the Loggerbots robotics
team and stated that it is an outstanding
program for the students and is receiving
tremendous community support. Parent
Susan Ely asked the Board to make a
new shop building a priority. Brookins
confirmed that the students that are part
of the robotics program are not getting
as much hands on work as they did last
year without a shop to work in.
Sherrie Ford reported on the
Spencer Health and Wellness clinic
which opened one month ago at the
school and noted that they are seeing an
average of eight patients each day they
are open. Ford says the clinic is being
well used and is at 75% capacity. Ford
thanked school staff for their help and
cooperation in making the clinic work
and that she is working to make sure

the clinic is seen as an asset and not a
disruption because it is meeting a health
care need.
NSBA Trip to Washington D.C.-Board
member Greg Kintz, who is a represen-
tative to the Oregon School Boards As-
sociation reported on his recent trip to
the National School Boards Association
meeting in Washington D.C. Kintz said
he had the chance to meet federal rep-
resentative staffers and enjoyed the trip
and felt it was very worthwhile.
Budget Calendar-The School Board
will hold Budget Meetings on May 9
and May 23 and are scheduled to hold a
Public Hearing on June 13.
Calendar Change-The Board approved
a change to the District Calendar to make
up snow days that occurred on Decem-
ber 18 and 19. The days will be made
up on Friday April 26 and Friday May 3.
Superintendents Report-Superinten-
dent Ken Cox reported on several is-
13
sues. He noted that the greenhouse that
will be constructed on school property is
progressing. He also commented on the
progress of the old school site demoli-
tion. Cox also discussed that a litter is-
sue around the school grounds has been
raised by the community. Cox also had
staff do some work on Texas Avenue to
try to repair some damage that had been
done there during construction.
Cox told the Board that the high
school band would be traveling to Salem
to perform at the opening of the State
Senate and would have a chance to meet
with some legislators and would than
head to Western Oregon University for a
band clinic.
Upcoming School Board Workshop-
The Vernonia School Board will meet at
the District office on February 28, 2013
for a workshop to discuss the potential
purchase and moving of the old Middle
School building to the new school cam-
pus.
Loggerbots Ready to Compete continued from page 12
In mid-February the team was putting some of the final
touches on the robot. In a practice session the Logger-
bots robot was accurately projecting Frisbees through
their intended target from eighteen feet away and was
able to lift itself off the ground far enough to score
points. Conner Larke was the operator of the robot,
Jacob Eyrrick was responsible for the computer pro-
graming. Other students on the team are Bailey Wil-
liams, Brad Ely, Meagan Ely, Kaitlyn Eyrrick, Sarah
Wagner, Heather Patton, Drew Chaney, Nicki Rainbolt,
Tim Jennings, Andrew Jennings, and Garrett Mullikin
and Jeffrey Goodman
The VHS students have a group of dedicated
adult mentors who have been assisting them with the
project. Jack Finzel has provided use of his home shop
for fabrication since the school currently does not have
a metal shop. Other mentors have helped the students
with electrical and mechanical issues.
The Loggerbots team has been meeting week-
ly on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, as
well as Saturday’s during the day.
The students have created their own website
to promote their project. They have already gained
sponsorship from NASA and several local businesses
including A-Jax Ma- Robotics mentors Mitch Siebert and Daniel Mullikin work
chine, Procraft, TNW
with Quintin Skanes.
Corporation,
Intel, Hardware. They are continuing to recruit additional
Dass Logging, Gwin sponsors.
