And during the summer only 19,000 actually have ac- cess to free and reduced meals offered by summer meal programs. That means 9 out of 10 students go hungry on a daily basis during the summer months. Fur- ther, in Vernonia, over 220 families de- pend on the Vernonia Food Bank to help augment their food pantry. Again this year, in partnership with St. Helen’s School District, Pioneer Baptist Fellowship and Vernonia Pre- vention Coalition, the Vernonia Summer Meal program will be providing meals for youth between the ages of 1-18yrs. These meals are free through the USDA summer meals program. In Vernonia, both breakfast and lunch will be served from June 18th-Aug. 17th. A success- ful application was once again awarded by the Partners for Hunger Free Or- egon. The funds will support the meal site hosted at the Vernonia Community Church: 957 State Street. As an added bonus, the Vernonia Summer Meals Program has also been selected as a summer kick off site for Partners for Hunger Free Oregon. Only two sites are chosen for these kick off events. “The Vernonia Summer Meals Program is a great example of what part- nerships can do to address the growing food insecurities in Oregon,” states Rose Walker, Child Nutrition Outreach Spe- cialist. “Last year they did an outstand- ing job in only their first year!” On June 28th join us for a day of Fun, Food, and activities to celebrate Oregon’s 2012 Summer Food Program. The event starts at 11:30. Everyone is Vernonia Community Church - the new location of Vernonia Summer Meals Program. Great ican r e m A Bash rt C on c e th 4 y l u J welcome! A calendar of events is currently being planned between breakfast and lunch. Projects have been identified and put on the calendar: gardening, cooking, physical activities, library program and more. “The more opportunities we give our kids to explore their strengths, the higher the protective factors they devel- op to be more successful in their grow- ing up years, states DeAnna Pearl, VPC Director. “It is all about reducing the risks they face every day, and increasing their potential by participating in healthy activities.” Families are welcome to come and participate in all activities. How- ever, children under the ages of 10 need to have an older sibling, parent or guard- ian to supervise. The summer meals pro- gram will have vol- unteers available to help with meals and activities but the pro- gram is not set up to provide day care. Kids are free to come and go but the meal times are set in stone. “We can only pro- vide the meals during posted times per the USDA food program requirements,” com- ments Cathy Meyer, Summer Meals Coordinator. Parents and care providers are able to purchase meals while with their child: Breakfast $1.50 and Lunch $2.50. If you are hosting a camp, activity, proj- ect or just a parent please feel free to contact us. Volunteers are always wel- come. We also need groups to host an activity during the summer. Volunteer- ing is not necessary to feed your own or other children. Contact Nic Welch, VSMP Volunteer Coordinator, at (503) 369-6734. See you this summer!
