16 community news april10 2012 Church News and Events: “COME ON, BACK FROM THE DEAD? WHAT KIND OF INCENSE ARE YOUR BELIEVERS BURNING?” A look back on the Easter story I mean how you can believe in this? That book you read is filled with nonsensical, weird stories. Some guy, 2000 years ago makes the most outrageous claims EVER, even by today’s standards, gets Himself killed (no BIG surprise there!) and then to top it off, claims He was resurrected three days later and went back home to HEAVEN! Pretty crazy sounding stuff if you ask me Mark. I get it John, the book is the Bible and His name was, correction, is, Jesus. I find it interesting people believe in the supernatural (i.e. Ghosts, spirits, paranormal sightings) and take it at face value. Yet when science claims that the historical happenings of “100 billion years ago” are disputable and testimonies of long dead men are disrepute then doubts and suspicions are the consensus. However, this book of nonsense and weird stories has proven to be one of the most accurate historical documents of all time. He was well recorded, his every move challenged and his impact indeed changed the world as we know it today. B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (stands for the Latin “Anno Domini,” meaning in the Year of our Lord) marked His birth and death and determined time and how we measure it. Then the need to be politically correct changed these. There are at least 12 different appearances of Christ in the resurrection accounts, beginning with Mary, ending with Paul. They were physical, tangible experiences with Christ eating, speaking and allowing Himself to be touched. These were local folks who knew Him, saw the miracles he performed (feeding of 5000, healings, raising Lazarus from the dead), the suffering He endured, ultimately suffering death on the cross, all the while never drawing attention to Himself, but instead giving all glory to God. All to reconcile us to Himself in an act of love. Here in these strange, unbelievable stories no greater love is found! In the end we are given the freedom to believe or not! It told of His coming in great detail 500 years before it ever happened. It told of His purpose and death. Yet, possibly most important, it also told us this part; the resurrection! It seems fitting that we celebrate this in the spring. A time when the cold of winter (death) gives way to the warmth of new life; it is a time of remembering suffering that has been endured so that renewed hope can be experienced. Crazy stories maybe, (I can see it) but doesn’t it seem that someone during this period of recorded history would have refuted the claims if untrue instead of planting the seeds of doubt “6000 years later”? I find the Bible to be a great piece of literature on its own, and then add its historical accuracy and it changes things. Finally add faith and you have an indisputable equation for an offer of hope eternal as we join Jesus in that same promise of a resurrected life, now and after this life!
