6 community news february28 2012 Local Food Bank Information Vernonia Cares Food Bank is pleased to announce increased income guidelines for USDA foods which are included in the emergency food box- es given by their organization. USDA foods include 10-20 different types of foods. These foods are added into the monthly emergency food boxes which contain many other foods purchased through the Oregon Food Bank. A typi- cal emergency grocery order is given to registered applicants once a month. It contains about three to five days’ worth of food and is available for residents liv- ing in the Vernonia, Buxton, and Timber area. “Our target population is listed below,” states Executive Director Sandy Welch. “However, we are aware that what your income was last month might look very different this month if you just became unemployed. You need help this month; you didn’t need help last month. That is taken into consideration. We also have DHS applications on hand and we can help by faxing completed forms to St Helens for clients so they might quali- fy for SNAP Cards (formerly called food stamps). Currently we help about 400 people per month. In a time when people are discouraged by so many things, we are thankful we can extend help, thanks to our generous donors. Anyone already receiving food stamps is automatically eligible for an emergency grocery box,” concludes Ms. Welch. USDA/TEFAP 2012 Eligibil- ity Guidelines: 1 person household, $1,722 gross income per month; 2 per- son household, $2,333; 3 person house- hold, $2,944. For each additional mem- ber, add $611 gross income per month. (This would be the gross income for all members of the same household.) Groceries are obtained by a sim- ple registration process, listing names of all residents in a household and ad- dress. Age categories are asked but not required. The Vernonia Community Church is pleased to announce the guest speaker and date for this year’s Sportsman’s Banquet as well as the date tickets will be available. The event date is April 14, 2012 and ticket sales will begin on March 14 and will be available at the Vernonia Sentry Market Video Department. There are only 300 tickets available; tickets are only $10. The event includes a BBQ Dinner by Cousin Kenny’s BBQ, the now famous Head and Horn Show and Great Door Prizes. In addition, the Sportsman’s Banquet is very excited to announce this year’s guest speaker, Jase Robertson, one of the Duckmen from the Duck Commanders television show. “This guy is a very sought after speaker,” says event organizer Chad Hewitt. “ People will know who he is and will be amazed he is coming to Vernonia.” Robertson grew up with a passion for duck hunting from an early age. Hunting, along with helping the family business to succeed, consumes most of Jase’s time. Aside from his current role as a duckman in the Duck Commander DVDs, he runs the manufacturing part of Duck Commander, making sure that every call is hand-tuned, in large part by himself. Jase’s reality show “Duck Legacy” premiers on the A&E channel on March 21, 2012. It is a show based on the lives of the Duckmen Jase travels with his wife, Missy, to various hunting expeditions and speaking engagements all over the country. He is a very talented and entertaining speaker who touches the lives of many through his stories of hunting experiences, knowledge of ducks and witty anecdotes about life along with the hope he’s found through his Savior Jesus Christ. Please en- ter the church by way of the gym door off A Street. Donations are accepted to pay for the transport charge to bring the bread daily from Forest Grove Safe- way to Vernonia. “If everyone would just give $1 more as they access these bread products, we would not experi- ence a loss to pay for this service,” says Ms. Welch. “We don’t look to make a profit, just to break even. The daily trips are necessary to keep the supply coming. However, we’ve see a consistent loss for this service. I’d really encourage people to be more generous, if at all possible, so we don’t have to lose this opportunity to bring bread products to Vernonia,” Welch encourages.
