12 schools october11 2011 VHS Fall Sports Update Football—The Vernonia Loggers defeated Santiam on September 23, 70-16, ending a long losing streak that stretched over four seasons. The Loggers dominated Santiam, scoring touchdowns in a variety of ways. Logger head coach Gordon Jarmin was pleased with the play of his defense which created numerous turnovers leading to several to scores. The special teams were also responsible for several big plays. And the offense scored on both the ground and through the air. “We played well on both sides of the ball,” said Jarmin. “We played a pressure defense and did a lot of good things. And on offense, we’re basically a running team and they brought up eleven men and tried to stop us and we just used some dump passes over the top to beat them.” According to Jarmin Tim Jennings and Austin Cutright both did a good job at quarterback running the option. The Loggers joy after the Santiam victory was somewhat short lived as they came up short against Culver the following Friday, losing 39- 12. The Loggers played well for three quarters, playing Culver evenly, but fell apart in the final quarter giving up several turnovers. Poor tackling, mental mistakes and an inability to move the ball offensively doomed the Loggers effort. Highlights for the Vernonia squad included a long punt return by Cutright for a touchdown and strong running by Sean Solberg. The Loggers began league play against Portland Christian on October 7.
