schools 204 Army Band To Perform in Vernonia th The 204th Army Band, of the Army Reserves, will be performing a free concert in Vernonia at 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 2. The concert will be consist of a little bit of everything, including Sousa marches, popular tunes, standard band music, and will also feature several of their small ensembles, jazz band and others. Rob Izzett is the Enlisted Rehearsal Conductor as well as the music librarian, and euphonium player for the 204th Army Band. Izzett is the Band Instructor for Vernonia High School and Middle School. This is the same band that performed in Vernonia in December 2009. In case of inclement weather the concert will be moved indoors to the Washington Grade School Auditorium. Based out of Vancouver, Washington, the 204th Army Band of the Army Reserves was activated on October 16, 2008 as part of the 88th Regional Readiness Command out of Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. The band The Ford Family Foundation Announces Vernonia Scholarship Award The Ford Family Foundation has selected 104 students from Oregon as new Ford Scholars, including Vernonia High School graduate, Mason Roberts. This year’s Oregon Ford Scholars were chosen from 4,618 applicants. Roberts plans to attend Oregon State University and study Civil Engineering. Kenneth W. Ford built his business, Roseburg Forest Products Co., from a one-man operation in the 1930’s into one of the West Coast’s largest wood products manufacturers. He established The Ford Family Foundation in 1957 after the business had experienced several decades of growth. Kenneth W. Ford established the scholarship program to help students who would find it difficult to obtain a college degree without financial assistance. Since 1994 the Foundation’s scholarship programs have awarded students more than $100 million. Eligibility criteria include financial need and merit qualifications. The renewable scholarship covers 90 percent ($1,000 minimum/$25,000 maximum) of each student’s unmet financial need for college each academic year, with first-year student awards averaging $6,910 per year. Band members come from all professions to include music teachers, college students, IT professionals, government workers, retail workers, commercial pilots, and many more. The band typically meets one weekend a month and two june28 2011 13 weeks in the summer, with other extra performances throughout the year. A paid musical opportunity, the band is open to qualified musicians between the ages of 18 – 38 who are able to pass a competitive audition as well as attend basic training and advanced musical training at the US Army School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia.
