PAGE 10 | July 6, 2018 | NORTHWEST LABOR PRESS HAPPENINGS Machinist to hold ‘Solidarity Rally’ at Precision Castparts Labor at Lagunitas Happy Hour to benefit LCSA Machinists District Lodge W24 will hold a “Solidarity Rally” July 11 for 100 welders at Pre- cision Castparts Corp. (PCC) who voted to join the union last September. The Portland-based company appealed the election, arguing that a welders-only bargaining unit wasn’t legal because the welders work in 18 separate de- partments at three separate cam- puses. In May, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in Washington, D.C., ruled other- wise, saying a welders-only unit at PCC is appropriate. According to the Machinists, the company still refuses to rec- ognize the union, refuses to ne- gotiate with the union, refuses to allow the union workplace ac- cess for safety inspections, and refuses to recognize shop stew- ards and Weingarten rights. The Machinists have filed multiple unfair labor practice charges with the NLRB. The Machinists want to send a strong message to PCC that it will not go away and that it has strong community support. ■ When: Wednesday, July 11, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Guest speakers at noon. ■ Where: Precision Castparts Corp., 5001 SE Johnson Creek Blvd., Portland ■ For more information: contact Billy Anderson at anderson@iamaw.org or 312-887-9394; or Will Lukens at will@iamw24.org or call 503-568-9683. A Happy Hour fundraiser for Labor’s Community Service Agency will be held Thursday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lagunitas Community Room, 237 NE Broadway, Portland. Kaiser Permanente and Ameri- can Income Life are helping to sponsor the event, with all pro- ceeds going to LCSA’s solidar- ity helping hands programs. Spin Catering will provide the food (tacos), Lagunitas is donat- ing the beer, and AIL will pro- vide soft drinks. The food is free (paid for by Kaiser) and pints of beer will be sold for $4. Again, 100% of the proceeds will go to LCSA. AFL-CIO Summer School The popular AFL-CIO Summer School will be held Aug. 3-5 at the University of Oregon in Eu- gene. “All In! Launching a New Era in Oregon Unionism” is the theme of this year’s session. Classes will focus on building strong unions in a post-Janus world; promoting womens lead- ership and gender justice within unions; organizing, and more. The summer school isn’t only about workshops. There will be a “Labor’s Got Talent” show with prizes, and a solidar- ity picnic. The Summer School is presented by the Labor Edu- cation and Research Center at the University of Oregon, in conjunction with the Oregon AFL-CIO. ■ For more information: Contact Bob Bussel at bussel@uoregon.edu, or go to lerc.uoregon.edu/ summer-school.
