HAPPENINGS
Machinist to hold ‘Solidarity
Rally’ at Precision Castparts
Labor at Lagunitas Happy
Hour to benefit LCSA
Machinists District Lodge W24
will hold a “Solidarity Rally”
July 11 for 100 welders at Pre-
cision Castparts Corp. (PCC)
who voted to join the union last
September.
The Portland-based company
appealed the election, arguing
that a welders-only bargaining
unit wasn’t legal because the
welders work in 18 separate de-
partments at three separate cam-
puses.
In May, the National Labor
Relations Board (NLRB) in
Washington, D.C., ruled other-
wise, saying a welders-only unit
at PCC is appropriate.
According to the Machinists,
the company still refuses to rec-
ognize the union, refuses to ne-
gotiate with the union, refuses to
allow the union workplace ac-
cess for safety inspections, and
refuses to recognize shop stew-
ards and Weingarten rights.
The Machinists have filed
multiple unfair labor practice
charges with the NLRB.
The Machinists want to send
a strong message to PCC that it
will not go away and that it has
strong community support.

can Income Life are helping to

ity helping hands programs.

AFL-CIO Summer School
The popular AFL-CIO Summer
School will be held Aug. 3-5 at
the University of Oregon in Eu-
gene. “All In! Launching a New
Era in Oregon Unionism” is the
theme of this year’s session.
Classes will focus on building
strong unions in a post-Janus
world; promoting womens lead-
ership and gender justice within
unions; organizing, and more.
The summer school isn’t
only about workshops. There
will be a “Labor’s Got Talent”
show with prizes, and a solidar-
ity picnic. The Summer School
is presented by the Labor Edu-
cation and Research Center at
the University of Oregon, in
conjunction with the Oregon
AFL-CIO.

Labor Day picnic
The Portland metro area’s
largest Labor Day picnic will
take place at Oaks Amusement
Park in Southeast Portland,
sponsored by the Northwest
Oregon Labor Council, AFL-
CIO. Members and their fami-
lies from dozens of unions –
nearly 18,000 people – turn out
annually for barbecue, games,
carnival rides, raffle drawings,
music, and a chance to hear
from local politicians. The pic-
nic runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There
will be a kids’ scavenger hunt,
and a blood drive challenge.
Politicians take the stage at 1
p.m. Labor Day is the busiest
day of the year at Oaks Park. To
help union members avoid traf-
fic jams and parking headaches,
the Northwest Oregon Labor
Council has made arrangements
with the Oregon Pacific Rail-
road for a free shuttle train into
Oaks Park. The train boards at
Southeast 4th and Caruthers,
near OMSI. The five-mile shut-
tle runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
(last train). Contact the Labor
Council for train schedule and
parking arrangements at 503-
235-9444. To reserve a picnic
area, call Oaks Park at 503-233-
2438.
