i Entertainment The Vice Guide to Travel can blow minds m M argaret A dams ___________ Page Editor Vice is a free glossy magazine available at various locations (music stores, barbershops). Founded in Montreal, Canada in 1994, Vice is currently based in New York City, N.Y. and is known for controversial journalism and hipster employees. In their "Guide to Travel," which is the first installment of a quarterly DVD magazine, Vice correspondents travel to some of what they consider "the planet's most dangerous and weird destinations." From the main menu, there are seven different locations to choose from, each with an under ten minute short documenting their experiences and encounters. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, they travel to Sophia, Bulgaria in search of black market-sold dirty bombs. In Chernobyl, Ukraine they set out to hunt animals mutated by radioactive fallout. In Beirut, Lebanon, they meet a group of Palestine Liberation Organization "boy scouts:" young boys who sing war songs, carry guns and eventually become martyrs. In Darra, Pakistan, Vice co- founder Suroosh Alvi travels to the world's largest illegal arms market where 1,000 guns are made everyday and have been for the last 70 years. In The Republic of Congo, they search for the so-called last dinosaur in a thick, dense rainforest near Lake Tele. They make two stops in South America. In Nueva Germania, Paraguay, they set out to track down the last Nazis and meet a couple rumored cannibals. In Rio, Brazil, they travel to the favelas; the poorest areas of the city controlled by drug lords, and end up at raves hosted by these drug dealers. The footage is unbelievable. Each of their excursions is unreal and disturbing in one way or another. But aside from the trip to Pakistan, "The VICE Guide to Travel" falls a little short in each of their seven outings. Many of the segments lack the information necessary to fully understand the situation and are full of loopholes; some are inconclusive. Regardless, most of them are fascinating. The guide comes with a hard-bound book containing photos and an article about each featured destination. The DVD also has a hefty extras section with almost as much footage as the actual features. The trip to China in the extras is great. The DVD is unrated and issues the warning on the back cover: " ’The VICE Guide To Travel’ contains nudity, guns, drugs, cussing, and assorted other heaviness." You can buy it for 15 bucks on amazon.com but I'm not sure it's entirely worth it. Don't get me wrong, you should definitely see it, so try to rent it, or holler at me and I might lend you my copy.
