The Vice Guide to Travel can blow minds
m M argaret A dams ___________
Page Editor
Vice is a free glossy
magazine available at various
locations (music stores,
barbershops). Founded in
Montreal, Canada in 1994,
Vice is currently based in
New York City, N.Y. and
is known for controversial
journalism and hipster
employees. In their "Guide
to Travel," which is the first
installment of a quarterly
DVD magazine, Vice
correspondents travel to
some of what they consider
"the planet's most dangerous
and weird destinations."
From the main menu, there
are seven different locations
to choose from, each with
an under ten minute
short documenting their
experiences and encounters.
On the other side of
the Atlantic Ocean, they
travel to Sophia, Bulgaria in
search of black market-sold
dirty bombs. In Chernobyl,
Ukraine they set out to
hunt animals mutated by
radioactive fallout. In Beirut,
Lebanon, they meet a group
of Palestine Liberation
Organization "boy scouts:"
young boys who sing war
songs, carry guns and
eventually become martyrs.
In Darra, Pakistan, Vice co-
founder Suroosh Alvi travels
to the world's largest illegal
arms market where 1,000
guns are made everyday
and have been for the last
70 years. In The Republic of
Congo, they search for the
so-called last dinosaur in a
thick, dense rainforest near
Lake Tele.
They make two stops in
South America. In Nueva
Germania, Paraguay, they
set out to track down the
last Nazis and meet a couple
rumored cannibals. In Rio,
Brazil, they travel to the
favelas; the poorest areas of
the city controlled by drug
lords, and end up at raves
hosted by these drug dealers.
The footage is
unbelievable. Each of their
excursions is unreal and
disturbing in one way or
another. But aside from
the trip to Pakistan, "The
VICE Guide to Travel"
falls a little short in each of
their seven outings. Many
of the segments lack the
information necessary to
fully understand the situation
and are full of loopholes;
some are inconclusive.
Regardless, most of them are
fascinating.
The guide comes with a
hard-bound book containing
photos and an article about
each featured destination.
The DVD also has a hefty
extras section with almost as
much footage as the actual
features. The trip to China in
the extras is great. The DVD
is unrated and issues the
warning on the back cover:
" ’The VICE Guide To Travel’
contains nudity, guns, drugs,
cussing, and assorted other
heaviness."
You can buy it for 15 bucks
on amazon.com but I'm not
sure it's entirely worth it.
Don't get me wrong, you
should definitely see it, so try
to rent it, or holler at me and
I might lend you my copy.

It's amazing when you get
to see some of your favorite
bands all in one place and
music festivals are the places
that happens. Whether it’s
punk you like or indie, there
is a music festival for you.
Sasquatch! Music Festival,
located in the scenic Columbia
River Gorge, features two
days of alternative music
during the summer This year
it will feature bands such
e Beastie Boys, Bjork,
ie Fire and much, much
more. The bands play on three
stages, the Main Stage, the
Wookie Stage and the Yeti
Stage. The best bands get the
best stage and the smaller
bands perform on the smaller
stages.
Sasquatch! is a good
outlet for lesser known
bands to get a chance at fame
with thousands of people
attending each year. The
Gorge is a great location for
a festival of this size and
it also gives the bands an
amazing, scenic backdrop
for their performances. The
amphitheater style also
guarantees a good view for
all. Sasquatch has a lot of
sponsors like Dakine and
Xbox, so be prepared to

You can find more

can also buy tickets and a
camping pass through the
site.
The Warped Tour is a
music festival with bands that
travel all around the United
States, playing different
venues for people who like
punk. Around 50 bands play,
town to town, and will create
a good show.
It goes on in
the summer
so bring lots
of sunscreen
because you
most likely
will get
sunburned
otherwise.
This year it

The camping at the festival
is kind of cramped and
toilets aren't top quality so
if roughing it is a problem,
you're in trouble. From the
campsite, the venue is a 15

premium spots you can get
a shuttle. They also throw

Coachella, held at the
end of April, is probably the
biggest festival of the year.
Unfortunately for us, it's in
Southern California. It has
the biggest and best bands
that play over three days. The
lineup is so elite that tickets
sold out extra fast, something
that is expected when Rage
Against the Machine, Red
Hot Chilli Peppers and Arctic
Monkeys play at the same
place. If you are willing to
pay thousands of dollars for a
ticket visit www.ebay.com.
Music festivals are great;
they bring you and hundreds
of people together to enjoy a
common interest: good music.
Netflix: the new Blockbuster

Next time you want to
rent a movie, consider Block
buster Total Access or Net
flix. Both companies offer
online movie selection and
free delivery. Here is how it
works: 1. You create a list of
DVDs online. 2. The movies
arrive in the mail within one
business day. 3. You keep the
movies as long as you want,
no late fees. 4. Simply return
in the prepaid envelopes,
and the next DVD on your
list will be sent to you.
The most popular plan
for Blockbuster and Netflix
gives you unlimited rentals
every month, three DVDs
at-a-time and costs $17.99. In
addition, Netflix offers a free
two-week trial as an extra
incentive. Blockbuster offers
a free in-store game rental
plus in-store return.
Blockbuster gives its cus
tomers the choice to return
the movie via mail or ex
change the movie at a partic
ipating store. That provides
people the convenience o f
choosing a movie at the last
minute and enables people
to watch more movies on a
monthly basis.
Blockbuster has more
return options, however,
many customers have com
plained that Blockbuster is
unreliable and and has fewer
movie titles than Netflix.
Blockbuster only carries
65,000 movie titles. Netflix
has a selection of over 75,000
movies in stock.
"Netflix is cooler, because
it has a better selection of
movies," Christian Hazen-
Cubbage, sophomore said.
Blockbuster in West Linn
is located on Salamo Road
in the complex, and you
can rent through Netflix at
www.netflix.com. Whether
it is one DVD at-a-time,
limited two per month, or
four DVDs at-a-time, un
limited, Blockbuster and
Netflix has a plan to suit
your lifestyle.
