Page Three THE AMPLIFIER Friday, January 26,1945 Tillamook Sends Lions to Cellar SPORTS Lion Quint Beats Newberg Seaside Trip Planned The West Linn varsity won their second league game from Newberg who were undefeated by a 26-21 margin. The Lions didn’t get started quite as fast as the Tigers but overcame, a 6-0 deficit to tie the score at the end of the first quar ter 8 all. The second quarter was in West Linn’s favor with the Lions playing their type of ball handi ly. Newberg, played their type of ball which conSisetd of passing the ball and very seldom drib- blingT The half-time score was 15-9. The third quarter the Tigers began to pull up and came with in one point,of tieing the score. The score at the end of this pe riod was 18-17. The last quarter, the Tigers tried vainly to get in the lead but the Lions pulled ahead. With about four minutes to go the game speeded up to a break-neck pose. The Lions took a time-out and successfully stalled the last two minutes to have the game ended 26-21. Ralph Matile, Lion center, was high scorer making 15 points. They have de feated Tigard 30-27, lost to Forest Grove 25-24, also were beaten by McMinnville 27-24. They then came back to beat Newberg 26- 21 and beaten by the BeaVers. In all these games West Linn has compiled 127 to their op ponents 136. Matile, center, is high scorer with 45 points. On January 26, the team will travel to Tillamook and play with Cheesemakers on their floor. This is the team West Linn lost to by only one point in the jam boree. On the 27th the Lions will travel to Seaside, where they will play them. On the 28th the Lions will return home. Allison, of McMinnville, proved just too much for the West Linn Lions, When he scored 2T points for his team. If he could have made three more points he could have tied West Linn by himself in scoring. The final store was 37 to 24, with the Lions coming out on the low end of the score. The Cubs also lost their game. Roy Pearson, Cub forward thought that he’d do the McMinn ville team a favor, so he made two points for them by making a goal through the. wrong basket, but not long afterwards Trent of McMinnville did the same thing for the Cubs. The game ended 11 to 7, a victory for McMinn ville. Hoopsters Whip Tiger Five 30-27 Lion Five Loses To Vikings; 25-24 Juniors Win by Large Margin Over Vikes The West Linn juniors won again. This time thçy beat the Forest Grove Vikings. At first Forest Grove enjoyed a 8 to 1 leàd, but by the end of the first quarter, West Linn closed the margin to 8 to 7. In the second quarter a foul on Forest Grove tied 'the score 8 to 8. In the second half the boys on the hill began to roll and started dominating the ftoor. West Linn continued, and won the game by the score of 36 to 23. The varsity teàms had a lovr scoring,game, due to a tight de fense played by both teams, and also they played man-to-man. The first quarter ended 7 to 5 in Forest Grove’s favor. Forest Grove, got most of their points on long and lucky shots. The first half ended 15 to 11, with West Linn out in front this time, with either team dominating the floor. In the third quarter Forest Grove closed the gap to just one point, 21 to 20, still in favor of West Linh. That margin was held for about six minutes, then Forest Grove made a basket putting them out ahead 22 to 21. Twenty seconds from the end of the game Forest Grove made a foul. Of the two shots West Linn made one, tieing the game. That is the way the game stood when the whistle blew. In the overtime period West Linn again pulled ahead making two points, but Forest Grove also made two points. With the score tied again West Linn committed a foul, and Forest Grove won. They are not alone though ip the cellar and are determined to avenge this defeat tomorrow night on the Cheesemakers own floor. The height of the center and the cagey playing under the basket of a guard put the Lions under the eight ball. In the first quarter the Cheesemakers gained a small margin of 6 to 7 when the first rest period came. By the time the half way mark had come the Lions had fallen behind 11 to 15. During the first half Matile, usual high scorer, was able to connect with only one free throw, but Stauffer had put in five" points. Right after the half time they increased their - lead to seven points but the Lions put on a burst of hotshots to tie the score at 18-air during this period. But the Cheesemakers wouldn’t stand for this and put in twp quick field goals to leave the score 22-18 in their favor. The Lions again pulled up during the last period, but were unable to stop the fast scoring Cheesem’akers and Were unable to get back in the game even though they tried breaking in with a manto rnan defensei The Cheesemakers took scor ing honors with Watt,. the tall center, tipping 14 points, and Ta n n 1 e r, putting JI. Matile caught 'his eye during tbe last half and managed to put in nine points to put his total up to 10. Stauffer also collected five i points during this period to make his total 10 also. Lions Drop Close Game to Beavers After holding a half-time lead of 11-6 the Lions faltered to let the Beaverton Beavers win the game 19 to 17. Matile,\ Lion center and top scorer for the game, made all his points in the first half. hTe contest a was low scoring, slow moving game in the way of excitement until the last few minutes, The second half started with the score 11 to 6 but the Bea vers commenced to catch up with the Lions to tie the score at 14 all in the last quarter. The next few minutes the Beavers put in two field goals holding the Lions to one small free throw point. There was then 15 seconds with the ball in the Beaver position. The Lions switched from their regular zone defense to a man to man de fense. They got the ball away from the Beavers and Mindt put in a swisher to leave the Lions one point behind. The Beavers then got the ball and their was a foul called with about a half second to go. O’Connor, a Beaver forward, took his shot and the horn blew while the ball was still bouncing on the rim but it went in to give the game -4o Beaverton by a score of 19 to 17.
