Friday, November 29, 1940 THE AMPLIFIER Turnout is Large Hill Military Is For Wrestling Track Meet Host Coach Newton of the wrestling says that the turnout of mat men this year is the largest West Linn has ever had, with 42 boys signed up at the present time. There will be plenty of veter ans returning from last years grapplers, with captain Ed Wood worth, 145 lbs., and Jack Reams, 135 lb., both three year lettermen. Johnny Morrison is a two year letterman in the 95 lb. division, and second place winner in the state meet last year. Eldore Baisch, 125, is another returning letterman. He took second in the Willamette Valley meet last spring. Another letterman who won second place in the W.V.I. last year is Don Stockton, who weighs in at 130. Les Ream, Bill Thornton, Scratch Etchison, Gene Vinson and Dudley Titus all saw action last year for the Lions. Mr. New ton is well pleased with the turn out. All weights are well repre sented except the 155 and 165 classes which could both use a couple more men. Last week on November 20th Coach Fors and his hill and dal- ers traveled to Hill Military Aca demy at Rock Butte to take part in the Northwest High School Cross Country Championship, which is open to any high school in Oregon, Washington, Idaho or California. West Linn’s cross country boys finished 21st in thé entirb meet with a score of 376. Mr. Fors was quoted as say ing, “we finished better than ex pected considering that our boys are largely freshman and sopho mores.” Coach Fors also stated that he looked forward to a fairly successful Cross Country season next year. The boys taking part in the varsity race included Raymond Yeoman, Donald Wohl, Maurice Warner, Raymond Scheckla, Lloyd Englert, perman Evans. The boys that took part in the junior high school race were Al vin Peters, Junior Bucklin, Henry Quade, William Tedd and John Sclness. Page Three Season for Lion Cubs Is Good Basketball Witnesses a Large Turnout The West Linn Lion Cubs, last Tuesday, completed a success ful gridiron season by trouncing the Canby “B” string 14-7. This year the cubs have played such teams from Hillsboro, Es tacada, Molalla, Canby, and the Oregon City Junior High, giving them an eight game schedule. Of these they lost only one—that being to Molalla. The boys im proved with each game and at the close of the season were playing like veterans. Paced by a backfield composed of G. W61f, J. Puderbaugh, R. Green, and D. Dennis, the Cubs ran up a total of 62 points to their opponents’ 33. In the line those *playing stellar ball were E. Booth, R. Ballieu, R. Elling son, C. Wilkinson, R. Reid, J. Gist, and D. Holden. Also play ing their share of consistent ball were Anthony, Van Laningham, Burgess, Silvers, L. Ream, E. Baisch, and Kelt. “All the boys gained a much needed experience and in an other year or two many of them should see a great deal of action on the first string varsity,” stat ed Mr. Tunnell, their coach. By JIM WHIPPLE Basketball practice opened at West Linn this week with a vet eran turnout despite the fact that Coach Brown has lost four lettermen from last year’s squad. Brown and Nixon should be able to assemble an experienced team from the boys who saw ac tion last year. One of the main worries may be the lack of height on the squad, a condition that is likely to make the Lions weak on play off the backboard. West Linn’s tall man will be Randall McLaughlin. West Linn hoopmen are Chick Elliot and Earle Merkle, lettermen from last year. McLaughlin, Hoss Herndon, Harley Fuson, Web Webster, Bill Walston, Red Eaden, Harold Ness, and Ike Ivins all played some last year, either on the first string or ,on the freshman team. This will be West Linn’s first basketball season in the TYV league and the Lions will play a round robin schedule that in cludes two games each with Ti gard, Beaverton, Newberg, Sher wood, Hillsboro and Forest Grove.
