Exchange students CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “Boise would be Bei Jing and Baker would be their home town,” explained James Doucette. Pastor James Doucette and his wife Krystal are a new host family for Li Yani and Zhang Jing, who are in tenth grade. It is the Doucettes’ first year as a host family and this is the first time Li Yani and Zhang Jing have trav- eled to America. They like America and would like to return in the future. The 5J District sent an email out to parents within the school district looking for host families. The Doucettes, who have children at Brooklyn Elementary, received an email about the exchange student program and decid- ed it would be fun. They plan to keep doing this. “We’re hoping to get students for the whole year,” said James. “We get to learn a lot about their culture. The first night we sat up and we exchanged music videos on YouTube. So that was really excit- ing.” The students are also able to learn about American culture. Some differences the Doucettes have learned between our cultures are they don’t eat with their hands and they don’t eat a lot of breakfast. Li Yani and Zhang Jing have learned they like pancakes and s’mores. The girls also made breakfast for the Doucettes. “They like amazingly spicy food,” said James. “They like spicy foods, they’re loving the pop- sicles and the little Haagen Dazs.” While here, the students went on a jet boat ride through Hells Canyon, hiked Pilcher Reservoir, visited Eastern Oregon University, fished, and traveling to Boise. They have a busy schedule and will have more adventures here in America until they leave the 27. “The Powder River Dance Club, a couple of their members, taught them some line dances at the street dance during Minors Jubilee,” said Krystal. Li Yani and Zhang Jing had never seen deer before coming to Baker. “I think it’s very com- fortable,” said Li Yani about Baker. “There are many animals every- where.” “Mark, the guy who’s doing this, we’re trying to kick it off to get the Baker High School District inter- ested in having foreign ex- change students come over for a whole school year and then he wants to send some American Students to China,” explained James Doucette.
