12 — THE BAKER COUNTY PRESS FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2015 Local Local Lions Club donates glasses around the world Three file for School Board According to County Clerk Cindy Carpenter, only three individuals have fi led to run for three open positions on the 5J School Board. Position 1 has been fi led for by Chris M. Hawkins who is currently on the Board. Position 2 has been fi led for by current School Board Chair Andrew Bryan. Melissa A. Irvine is seeking Position 5. The deadline for fi ling for any of these positions is March 19, so additional fi lings are possible, mean- ing a competitive race if any single position ends up with more than one candidate. Voters will decided the outcome of the election in May. Several other positions are also open in the other School Districts in Baker County, including Pine- Eagle and Unity’s 30J District. Members of the Baker City Lions Club met in February to sort and count hundreds of pairs of used eyeglasses, lenses and hearing aids to be dis- tributed to needy people throughout the world. About 700 pairs of glasses were collected from donation boxes located in businesses and offi ces throughout Baker City. They were counted and sorted by type, includ- ing prescription, reading, and sunglasses. A small number of separate lenses and hearing aids were also collected. The glasses and hear- ing aids were sent off for cleaning and restoration so they can be provided to low income people in the United States and other countries. Baker City Lions Club is a nonprofi t organization devoted to community service projects as well as sight and hearing at the state, national and interna- tional levels. The basis for successful relationships is simple: You turn to each other and you can heal, turn against each other and you damage.
