Klamath Falls had been heavily favored while "Roseburg and Ashland would fight it out for second." AshUnd sent a strong delega tion of district winners to the state meet held at Springfield, May 19-20. Setting district and school records in the 100 meter hurdles, Pain lluffbuhr won the hurdle event in 15.3. I.inda Ganzini of Roseburg held off Julie Davies for second place. The margin between Ganzini and Davies was measured in time as .01 - one one hundredth of a second difference. The old record had been set by Davies just last year at 15.75. The 440 yard relay team consisting of Miss Hoffbuhr, freshman. K a t h y Johnson, Sharon Hill and Ellen Reynolds, easily maintained their unde feated status and in doing so set a new school record of 51.7. Their chances for victory at state have been dimmed by the groin muscle pull of anchor leg. Miss Reynolds. Making a 1-2-3 sweep of the long jump finals, Ashland sent Terry Mct'lure and Julie Davies to state. Mct'lure set a district and school record of 17-5 in capturing first as she defeated Davies who had a jump of lti-l. Leaping 16-334. Reynolds took third in the event. Charity Wood defeated Sandy Herbert of Klamath Falls and Melanie Monroe of Medford for the javelin throw. Her winning toss measured 118-3. Ashland's inability to capture points in the field events, enabled Klamath to pull away in team scores from the Grizzlies. High jump produced three state contenders, all of which surpassed both the qualifying standard of 4-10 and the five foot barrier. Ganzini defeated Hoff buhr for the title by clearing 5-3'x, another district record. Miss Hoffbuhr, who had defeated Ganzini the week before at the same height, managed a 5-2 'j while teammate Kathleen Mc t'lure leaped 5-1 1 1 to capture third place. Other district finalists for Ashland included freshman ,: Ah .. If C huck Wiley attempts to sink a putt as Carey Schmaltz holds the flag. AHS Golfers Lose District strokes behind the winner, Med ford, and in last place in the five team event. Larry Astley shot a 88 for Ashland. Others were Carey Schmaltz with a 90, Doug Engle 93, and Pete Gray 93. A three way tie for sixth by Pat Akins was the highest the Ashland High Golf crew could come up with two weeks ago at the district golf match in Kla math Falls. Akins shot a 40 for the front nine and a 39 for the back nine for a three way tie for sixth at 79. He tied with Jim Johnson of Klamath Falls and Scott Cow of Roseburg. Roseburg. As a team Ashland shot 350, 43 7T fAcCarley's Book Store 161 East Main Susan MacCracken who ran the 440 yard dash, placing fourth, and the 880 yard run for sixth place. Johnson placed fifth in the 220 yard dash which Herbert of Klamath won in a record time of 26.31. The 8X0 yard medley relay with Hoffbuhr running the 220, Carol C'hristlieb and Reynolds spring ing 110's and Terry Mct'lure finishing with a 440, placed fourth. Kathleen Mct'lure high jumped 5-2' j at a meet with Phoenix only to have Pam Hoffbuhr jump 5-3 the next meet to abolish her school recored. I 1 " THE PHOENXX N0 THE TURTLE Carey Schmaltz tees off during preparations for competition. Schmaltz shot a '.Ml at the district golf match in Klamath Kails. Tennis Season Ends With Sub-Par Match Ashland High tennis team came through with a sub par performance at the district tennis match last Saturday at Southern Oregon College tennis courts. The team finished with just three points and only ahead of Phoenix in team scoring. Pat Overand, Lee Cook, and Tony Platko were the only Ashlanders to make it past the first round.
