Each contestant was required to write a three-to-five minute speech in the form of a radio broadcast on the subject 'The Challenge of Citizenship." In her speech Chris emphasized the fact that citizenship is challenge and that the two words are inter changeable. The finalists whom Chris de feated in the local contest were Cathy Christy, Trudee Lewis. Che ryl Newton, John Reid, Jon Rober son, and Kathy Rucker. The speeches were judged by Ashland High School teachers. The foreign exchange student represented Ashland in the dis-t-ict competition and was de feated by one point by the first place winner who represented St. Mary's. Juniors Sponsor Sadie Stomp; Various Students Voice Opinions Saturday, January 11, was the day for the long-postponed Sadie Hawkins Dance. The dance, spon sored by the junior class, was held in the cafeteria. About 150 students attended the annual event which was decorated in true Dogpatch style. Boxes, benches, and barrels lined the floor. A pig sty occupied one corner, and Marrying Sam was kept busy in another. Clyde Nelson and Chris Ho berg were chosen as Mr. and Mrs. Dogpatch. John Yaple and Carol Parker were chosen as L'il Abner and Daisy Mae. The prize for the most humorous costume went to "Grandma" Kay Newton. Main Ashland The following comments were jiven by some of the students ho attended the dance. Dave Lohman, junior: "The iance was not very well organiz- Student Council To Sponsor Ball Come one, come all to the annual Cupids Ball! This year the ball, sponsored by the Stu dent Council, will offer a new attraction. Instead of the usual Queen of Hearts and her four princesses, the King of Hearts and his five jacks will reign over the ball. About two weeks before the ball takes place, February 21, Cloma Zupan, president of the Pep Club, will call a special meeting to nominate two candi dates from each class for the King of Hearts and his five jacks. The Girls' League will then vote on them and the boy re ceiving the most votes will be crowned King of Hearts on the night of the ball. The other five candidates will become jackss. The evening will call for semi formal dress without flowers. and not very original but it was a very good dance. It was not really worthy of 16 SSS points, out the Senior play got 18, so . . Glenn Smith, senior: "It wasn't good as the juniors was last year. They didn't have hardly any af the decorations we had." Kay Newton, senior: "I person ally had a real good time but I '.bought this year's Sadie Haw kins was not really as original as the ones in past years. It did not seem to be one which took as much work as the others did." Sandy Tison, sophomore: "It was a real neat dane, one of the best we've had all year. Lots of the right kind of fun, but the rat ing (SSS) was kind of low."
