The Superheroes for Superkids event may have had humble Beginnings—hosted in a small Aloha coffee shop and netting $1,000—but the fourth annual benefit promises to be TransActive’s biggest yet. In addition to securing a larger venue and major sponsors such as OHSU, TransActive also netted a dynamic keynote speaker in People.com editor Janet Mock. Mock made the media rounds after her “It Gets Better” video, which drew from her life and transition experiences as a teenager, went viral. TransActive executive director Jenn Burleton contacted Mock to thank her for the video, and Mock expressed her desire to get involved with the organization. “Much to my joy and surprise, she imme diately responded and shared with me that AT A GLANCE she did that video precisely be cause [she] wanted to connect more with trans children and youth,” Burleton says. “She has an incredibly compelling story to tell... We’re so honored to have her at our event this year.” The auction, which includes a wide range of items from vaca tion getaways to body art to fur niture, will raise funds for the nation’s only organization pro viding counseling, case management (in cluding medical), advocacy, education, legal referrals and research specifically to families of transgender and gender non-conforming youth. Burleton says that the organization’s work effects more than just the children and fami lies it directly serves. “Most of the recent cases of youth sui cides are primarily the result of bullying over gender expression rather than being directly related to sexual orientation,” Bur leton says. “It’s important that, culturally, we recognize that the difficulties that many transgender children and youth face are a warning and reminder of the harmful expe riences that non-transgender but gender non-conforming children, youth and adults face every day.” JW NOVEMBER 11, 2011 It only makes sense that the most comprehensive selection of wallets, packs, messengers and laptop, Kindle, ¡PAD and ¡PHONE tech gear rarn in the Northwest would also be lS Í iPhone accessories “llU M I Save 2 5 % Entire stock of DATA Collection Trans Awareness Month Events Transfigurations Photo Exhibit Portland State University Workshops Through Dec. 8, PSU Smith Center White Sun., Nov. 20,10 a.m.-3p.m. Gallery, 1825 SW Broadway, pdx.edu/qrc.
