When Guitron would ask dance aficionados to name some Portland- hased companies, “Most could only name three, and no one could name more than five,” he recalls. This year, funded by two arts organizations plus The Boeing Company, Guitron’s idea is becoming a reality: two days of dance performances and classes, dubbed the Galaxy Dance Festival. Participants include A-WOL, Agnieszka Laska Dancers, The Circus Project, Portland Festival Ballet, flamenco artist Laura Onizuka, Pendu lum Aerial Arts and, o f course, Polaris Dance Theatre. Guitron points out that the festival, which is open to any professional dance organization or artist who applies, is not about “who has been around the lon gest or who is doing the best work.” Rather, the focus is on “collaborating and sharing resources and enjoy ing the diversity” o f Portland’s dance community. It is Guitron’s hope that “once people realize the richness and diversity, they’ll support it more.” F ri.-Sat., Aug. 12-13; D irector Park, 815 S W Park Ave.; fre e admission; additional details a t polarisdance.org. — R ebecca R again
