(5-8:30 p.m., Pivot, 209 SW 4th, pivotpdx.org) The Oregon Zoo without its Summer Concerts series is like The Jungle Book without Mowgli: lacking the bare necessities. We’ve come to count on the seasonal creature comforts of lush outdoor environs, adult beverages in a natural habitat and sounds that make us nostalgic for Way Back When. But this year’s lineup of retro-leaning acts has upped the bar, so to speak. Witness the three-decade trifecta of females hitting the zoo in August: k.d. lang, Hie Go-Go’s and Aimee Mann. That’s right. You can revel to “Constant Craving,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” and “Voices Carry” (“Save Me,” too) live and in person within a scant week’s span. Since their Gen X apexes—Lang, for 1992’s breakthrough disc In genue, and Mann, ‘Til Tuesday frontwoman-turned-Oscar nominee for her soundtrack to the 1999 film Magnolia—both women have continued to turn out critically acclaimed albums, earning loyal audi ences with their folk-country songcraft and intimate performances, regardless of venue. As for quintessential ‘80s girl group The Go-Go’s, back on tour 30 years after the release of popsterpiece Beauty and the Beat, Belinda Carlisle and crew keep the carefree days of their shimmery California kitsch and bubble-gum punk alive. After all, sometimes a vacation is, in fact, all you ever wanted. Go on, then, escape to the zoo—if only for an evening or two. Our House Dinner Series: A Summer Mon soon Wedding.
