That there are Pride events outside of the Portland metro and Salem areas is an encouraging reality in the modern LGBTQ_ movement, and something that’s been dis cussed in these pages before. But the fact they are persevering, even growing, is a better barometer for what celebrating pride across the state really means. Take this year’s Corvallis Pride—more notably, the fact it isn’t happening. What would have been the upstart event’s third an nual celebration and parade fell victim to the Pride Corvallis board disassembling just prior to planning time. Had the remaining organizers simply thrown in the towel, a cru cial community gathering may not have been able to recover. Instead, the annual Stone wall Dance and Social is teaming up with Pride Corvallis June 25 to present “Pride in Wonderland,” a catered buffet and dance evening with an Alice in Wonderland theme at Club Escape on the Oregon State University campus. All proceeds will go toward the 2012 Pride celebration (pridecorvallis.com). Or consider the plight faced by the 2010 Iris Pride Festival, held in Lincoln City on the Oregon coast. Last year’s festival was to include performances by the Wanderlust Circus, the return of Lily Armani as emcee and lots of bcachside merriment. Unfortu nately, the event was “monsooned out,” as organizer Nichole LeSage puts it, resulting in a significantly downsized indoor celebra tion. But in the spirit of a comeback, Iris Pride returns, superhero theme in tow, Sep tember 16-18. Expect Flamingo Bingo with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a cos tume contest and much more (Search for “Iris Pride Street Fair” on Facebook). Such acts of determination epitomize the spirit inherent in pride not just in oneself, but also in a community at large. Whatever region of the state, pride is spreading. And what follows is a list of statewide Pride 2011 activities for an emboldened LGBTQ_com munity as they stand, as of press time.
