to start an LGBTQ_soccer club. They real­
ized the need for a club where people could
feel comfortable on a sports team, no mat­
ter their background. They fielded a com­
petitive men’s team in 2006, and now there
are men’s, women’s, and coed teams that
play in multiple leagues around the Port­
land metro area.”
The NetRippers plan to host a much-
anticipated Annual International Friendly
Tournament for players from Canada, Se­
attle, New York and San Francisco July 1-3.
The event is expected to draw hundreds o f
players and includes a full weekend o f ac­
tivities for participants, their fans and
friends. A variety o f social events are
planned around the tournament, including
a Brunch and Beer Bust at Blitz Bar in the
Pearl. Additionally, throughout the current
Timbers season, Blitz and N R FC will host
viewing parties for all away games.
Donald Dimick, manager o f Blitz, says,
“We want to provide an environment
where N R FC and their friends can watch
Timbers games, and help grow their club.
We’re happy to provide a fundraising en­
gine for them. T h at’s why we’ve agreed to
sponsor the NetRippers and donate a por­
tion o f the Tim bers’ away games drink
specials to their club.”
And the NetRippers give right back to
the community. “Two summers ago, in
partnership with (^C enter, we did several
weekends o f summer clinics for area youth,”
Villarreal explains. “This was a good chance
to introduce kids to a sport that is fun and
easy to pick up.” This year, the N R FC is
working through Hands on Greater Port­
land, an organization that helps large
groups connect with volunteer opportuni­
ties in the area.
On top o f that, N R FC players will par­
ticipate in Portland’s Pride Parade on June
19, along with Blitz Bar Pearl, which will
host a post-parade party. The organization
will also be on hand for La Lucha, Port­
land’s Latino Gay Pride festival on Sunday,
July 17, to answer questions and recruit
new members. It sounds like Portland’s
soccer craze is just warming up.

It’s been more than 20 years since Paul
“Paolo” Scardina, 63, retired from dance, but
the established interior designer behind
Paolo Design Group still dabbles in
choreography.
As a Lifetime Member o f the Portland
Gay Men’s Chorus currently on hiatus,
Scardina has had many opportunities to
choreograph for the group, but says he
couldn’t pass up a second chance at working
on NakedMan — a song set the chorus will
