Oregon ACLU Presents First Charles F. Hinkle Award to Namesake Longtime Oregon attorney Charles F. Hin kle received the first award— named, appropri ately, after him— for extraordinary allegiance to the mission o f protecting and advancing civil Mercedes-Benz of Fortland Mercedes-Benz of Wilsonville liberties and rights during the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation o f Oregon’s Lib erty Dinner March 12. Held at the Portland Hilton, the 2011 Lib erty Dinner also featured words from David Fidanque, executive director o f the A C LU of Oregon, as well as a “Call to Action” by former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts, Morel Ink— formerly Witham and Dickey— presi dent Bill Dickey and a speech by Susan Her man, president o f the ACLU. The recognition given Hinkle marks yet an other personal milestone. Having begun volun teering for the A C LU in 1971, Hinkle’s legal work on many significant cases— including Merrick v. State Board o f Education, which overturned the Oregon Citizens Alliance’s first anti-gay ballot measure— has established him as one of the progressive equality movement’s leading attorneys. Hinkle served as lead attor ney on a total o f nearly two dozen challenges to OCA’s city and county anti-gay measures passed in 1993. “What I noticed was Charlie’s comment when he received this award: ‘Strange to be re ceiving an award for doing something that you totally enjoy,”’ Dickey tells Just Out. “My com ment to Charlie was that the real honor will be in the ensuing years for the young lawyers and volunteers who will aspire to receive the award themselves. Imagine the great person receiving the Charles F. Hinkle award in 2025, and how Charlie’s great legacy will inspire the troops coming up the ranks.” WHEN 3A J GETS CUT m PASTE ¡T.
