MARCH 18. 2011
we honor the work o f activists everywhere,
from the young person taking that brave first
step in coming out to those who exercise their
right to peacefully resist injustice,” stated Pride
executive board member Mark Santillo via
press release. “Each o f us has the power to ef
fect change in our own lives and to make a
difference in the lives o f others. This year’s
theme challenges our community to make that
critical decision to act.”
The Pride NW board also outlined a diverse
scope o f parade prizes to coincide with the
spirit o f the 2011 theme. Categories include
“Best Implementation o f Theme,’’ “Best Musi
cal or Other Performance,’“Most Enthusiasm”
and “Individual Stand-Out.” The first three
awards will go to groups, while the last award is
reserved for one person whose pride shines
brightest in the eyes of the judges.
Additionally, Pride Northwest announced
its partnership with the Willamette Week to
publish the official 2011 Pride Guide. The
publication is also sponsoring the Pride Pa
rade and Festival— held June 17-19 at Tom
McCall Waterfront Park— as well as the year-
round “Pride 365” program.
Across state lines, the planning committee
for Vancouver, Washington’s annual LGBTQ_
pride event Saturday in the Park has an
nounced details for this year’s festivities.
Going with the theme “Bigger, Better,
Brighter!” the city hailed by ' The Advocate as
the sixth gayest in America will host this year’s
Saturday in the Park on July 9 from 11 a.m. to
5 p.m. at Downtown
Vancouver’s Esther
Short Park.
Long billed as
America’s only fami
ly-friendly
pride
event, the 2011 edi
tion of Saturday in
the Park will feature
musical and cultural
performances, com
munity groups and
nonprofit organiza
tions, supportive local businesses, games and
activities for all ages, a health and wellness cen
ter, food booths and a beer garden for adults.
On Saturday, April 16, the “Red H ot” 11th
annual Red Dress Party hits NW 10th Avenue
at Hoyt Street, poised for another memorable
year of crimson couture and, more importantly,
ample fundraising for local nonprofits.
YW CA of Clark County, Pivot and (^ C en
ter are this year’s beneficiaries. Red Dress 2010
generated $40,000 for the SafeChoice Domes
tic Violence Program o f YWCA Clark County,
the Men’s Wellness Center and QCenter.
If ticket sales thus far are any indication, the
2011 party could be the biggest fundraiser yet.
New Red Dress president Brent Echols reports
that tickets have been selling very quickly since
they were made available March 15. As o f press
time, 250 VIP and 200 general admission tick
ets remained.
DJ Tronic, DJ Scotty D and DJ Adam West

are on board to fuel
the celebratory vibes,
and as always, the
Red Dress board just
wants their patrons
to enjoy a fabulously
fun party while
keeping in mind the
philanthropic impe
tus for the event.
“We retooled this
year and are going
back to our roots,”
says Echols. “Our goal was a more inti
mate feel where our patrons can connect
with each other a little easier.”
Tickets are available for purchase either in
person at Funny Bone (617 SW Washington
St.) or Starky’s (2913 SE Stark St.), or online at

Oregon ACLU Presents First
Charles F. Hinkle Award to
Namesake
Longtime Oregon attorney Charles F. Hin
kle received the first award— named, appropri
ately, after him— for extraordinary allegiance to
the mission o f protecting and advancing civil
Mercedes-Benz of Fortland
Mercedes-Benz of Wilsonville
liberties and rights during the American Civil
Liberties Union Foundation o f Oregon’s Lib
erty Dinner March 12.
Held at the Portland Hilton, the 2011 Lib
erty Dinner also featured words from David
Fidanque, executive director o f the A C LU of
Oregon, as well as a “Call to Action” by former
Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts, Morel
Ink— formerly Witham and Dickey— presi
dent Bill Dickey and a speech by Susan Her
man, president o f the ACLU.
The recognition given Hinkle marks yet an
other personal milestone. Having begun volun
teering for the A C LU in 1971, Hinkle’s legal
work on many significant cases— including
Merrick v. State Board o f Education, which
overturned the Oregon Citizens Alliance’s first
anti-gay ballot measure— has established him
as one of the progressive equality movement’s
leading attorneys. Hinkle served as lead attor
ney on a total o f nearly two dozen challenges to
OCA’s city and county anti-gay measures
passed in 1993.
“What I noticed was Charlie’s comment
when he received this award: ‘Strange to be re
ceiving an award for doing something that you
totally enjoy,”’ Dickey tells Just Out. “My com
ment to Charlie was that the real honor will be
in the ensuing years for the young lawyers and
volunteers who will aspire to receive the award
themselves. Imagine the great person receiving
the Charles F. Hinkle award in 2025, and how
Charlie’s great legacy will inspire the troops
coming up the ranks.”
