Sick of Sarah breathes new life into riot grrl punk genre Tired of musicians who pose as punk rockers but really aren’t? (Ahem, Avril Lavigne, anyone?) Fret no more, friends— meet Sick of Sarah. Formed in 2005, Sick of Sarah is an all-female punk rock band based in M in neapolis whose lineup consists of Abisha Uhl (lead vocals and guitar), Jessie Farmer (vocals and bass), Katie Murphy (lead guitar and vocals) and Brooke Svanes (drums). The band’s sound has been com pared to Sleater-Kinney, Tegan and Sara and The Breeders, and fellow female rockers have piled on the accolades. After touring with them, Susanna Hoff's of The Bangles described the band as “girls who play irresistible punk-infused pop music.” Heart’s Anne Wilson praised them as “the real d eal... a true working band who sing, write and play for real.” Touring in support of their just released album 2205, these rockin’chicks play Port land March 1 at Backspace. One listen to “Overexposure”—the first single off the disc—and I was instantly hooked. The music’s catchy, the guitar riff infectious and Uhl’s vocal stylings reminiscent of Shirley Manson of Garbage, my favorite girl rocker of all time. I found myself bop ping my head up and down, much to my roommates’ bewilderment. I assured them it was work related. Give Sick of Sarah a try—you’ll be bop-rocking soon, too.
